Opinions on the name Camilla / Millie

Our baby girl is due next month, and we were 100% set on the name Camilla, with the nickname Millie.

full name would be: Camilla Marie Surname

we have had everything personalised for her and her name put on her wall in her nursery, and we have been referring to her as her name since I was 15 weeks (we will most likely call her Millie most of the time) we have always loved the name Camilla but all of a sudden a couple of older family members have made really horrible comments about it and have said we are naming our baby after the countries most hated woman (The Queen consort) now I’m worried will everyone have that association and think it’s a horrible name?

thoughts would be really helpful

I can’t hear the word Camilla without it sounding like King Charles’s voice in my head.

Well yes, I'd assume you were naming her after the Queen too.

What about Camille as an alternative?

Camille is a boys' name and gives totally different vibes.

paranoiaofpufflings · 29/04/2025 18:30

I love the name, it’s so pretty. There are plenty of other Camillas in the world for it not to be associated with just one.
Whatever name you use with get some comments from other people. You just need to let that go.
You love the name and it’s a great choice. Stick with what you love!

FluffMagnet · 29/04/2025 18:31

I love the name and nickname OP, but just goes to show you shouldn't share names before the baby is here as for some reason people think they have the right to give their opinion (as though the name isn't settled until the baby is born). Really unkind behaviour from your relatives though.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 29/04/2025 18:54

It’s a nice nice. I don’t think it matters that it’s the queens name.

feelingrobbed · 29/04/2025 18:56

Prefer Diana.

Zippea · 29/04/2025 18:58

I have a Camilla. I love the name. Yes, people will comment but that soon dies down

I have noticed it is becoming more popular over recent years (prior to Camilla becoming queen consort).

Congratulations!

What? No it isn't!

BertSymptom · 29/04/2025 19:24

It seems like you’d already decided on Camilla Marie so it’s rude of your family to voice an opinion on it. It’s a perfectly nice name anyway, just a bit too posh for me.

I actually think Camilla (the name) is about to get more popular regardless of how unpopular Camilla (the Queen) might be as that’s what happens with names used by royals or in popular culture in general.

ScruffMuffin · 29/04/2025 19:47

feelingrobbed · 29/04/2025 18:56

Prefer Diana.

How on earth is this relevant to the OP, who is wondering whether to use the name she loves after some relatives decided to be rude about it?!

OP, it's a beautiful name, and clearly one that you love. By the time your daughter is old enough to have an opinion about sharing a name with Queen Camilla, the Queen will be a very old lady and hardly relevant to your DD and her friends, or maybe no longer with us.

Between us, my husband and I have several royal names within our families. We're not royalists, but it hasn't done any of them any harm sharing names with (often unpopular) royalty.

If anything, other people offering their unsolicited (and rude) opinions would make me more likely to stick to my guns and show them that their opinions hold no sway whatsoever. Years and years ago, my friend decided to name her unborn daughter Leonie. Perfectly good name, not my cup of tea but that's good - having different taste means my daughter didn't have to share a name with my friend's daughter!! In the later stages of the pregnancy, friend's mum CAMPAIGNED to call the baby Jessica, and even started referring to the bump (and future baby) as Jessica. I have never understood this behaviour, especially from grandparents. They've had their turn!

mummysmagicmedicine · 29/04/2025 20:27

I work with kids and have come across several Camilla’s recently and I’ve not once thought of the queen consort. If you like it go for it!

JacketPotatoAvecFromage · 29/04/2025 21:51

I really love the name Camilla. It’s a very pretty name. Not so keen on Millie. I’d probably use Cam or Cami as a nickname for Camilla x

LilyJosephine · 29/04/2025 22:08

Camilla is gorgeous - an elegant Latin name that only seems to be underused in the UK because of its major association with the C P-B (in comparison to internationally where the Camila variation at least is very popular).

But the “other woman” associations with C P- B are being largely forgotten imo and realistically by the time your daughter is in secondary school (the more prime time for any potential name teasing), its reasonable to think that Camilla won’t be Queen anymore either and therefore so often in the media.

I say go for it, it’s a lovely name (and I agree with you that Millie on its own doesn’t give her the same options - plus the Milly vs Millie thing might get tiresome as both variants are well used).

DaisyPoppy7 · 29/04/2025 22:13

I think it’s a beautiful name, I’m a similar age to you and agree, I don’t think our age group would associate the name with Queen Camilla. Much more likely to point out that Millie Mackintosh is also Camilla.

AmiablePedant · 29/04/2025 22:23

Camilla is a woman warrior in Virgil's Aeneid! Go Camilla!
But Millie is surely the usual nickname for Millicent. Cammie?

I’ve heard of several Camilla’s who go by Millie.
Millie is also a popular shortening for Amelia.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/04/2025 08:18

In my single, childless 20s my mythical DD was going to be called Camilla known as Millie.

In my 40s my actual daughter is not called Camilla, but I still like the name and Millie as a pet form. Ignore the Queen Consort! She doesn't own the name!

Ladamesansmerci · 30/04/2025 08:20

The younger generation won't really remember Camilla by the time they get there!

I think of Camilla Dallerup from Strictly 😂 I think it's a lovely name!

WtafIsThat · 30/04/2025 11:45

Camilla is nice who cares what your family think? Millie? Meh, there are tons of them.

Lascivious · 30/04/2025 11:49

Camilla is a lovely name. Not mad about Millie, but that’s because there are so many of them.

And apart from the odd rabid Princess Diana loon, I don’t think anyone hates the queen. Far from it.

Fastingandhungry · 30/04/2025 11:52

I know two 20 year old Camilla’s, really lovely name. One is known as Cam and the other Millie. They are wealthy old school families. Not that it matters, go with the name you love.

user1492757084 · 30/04/2025 12:14

Camilla is a great name.
Not too common, easy to say and it is pretty without being sugary.

I also like Queen Camilla.
I hope your Camilla Marie ends up with a voice as wonderful as the voice of Queen Camilla.

RuthW · 30/04/2025 12:55

Lovely name.

gertrudebiggles · 30/04/2025 12:57

Love the name and I dont actually associate with Camilla. She's not really popular TBH, so doesn't cross my mind

We'd have used Camilla except it rhymes with our surname so was out!

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 30/04/2025 13:01

Camilla is a lovely name and I really like Millie.
I don't tend to think of the Queen really when I hear it.
