Our baby girl is due next month, and we were 100% set on the name Camilla, with the nickname Millie.

full name would be: Camilla Marie Surname

we have had everything personalised for her and her name put on her wall in her nursery, and we have been referring to her as her name since I was 15 weeks (we will most likely call her Millie most of the time) we have always loved the name Camilla but all of a sudden a couple of older family members have made really horrible comments about it and have said we are naming our baby after the countries most hated woman (The Queen consort) now I’m worried will everyone have that association and think it’s a horrible name?

thoughts would be really helpful

Im also in my 30s And i dont know anyone our age who gives a fuck about tho whole C/D + Camilla situation, my kids' generation even less so.

I dont love the name but it's fine and Queen Camilla is no longer really discussed beyond her doing her royal duties.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2025 13:18

Even if people didn’t think you were referring to the Queen specifically, they WILL make “hilarious”comments. Honestly? Don’t do it. How about Clarissa, shortened to Clary?

Don’t like the other suggestions, seems most people don’t think of the queen

I love the name Camille/Camilla but I think Millie is really boring and overused.

Neurotoxic · 30/04/2025 14:52

No one is going to bully her over Queen Camilla that's just silly
And if they want to bully her they'll just pick something else to bully her about if you choose a different name
No one is bullying little boys called Andrew just because of Prince Andrew

Reddelilah · 30/04/2025 15:00

Camilla is alright, but Millie is very overused. I think a lot of Amelies might be known as Millie, but we know loads.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 30/04/2025 15:15

I like Camilla and love the nickname Milla (not so keen on Millie). I suggested it to DH but got shot down.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 30/04/2025 16:40

There’s always Camelia.

PurBal · 30/04/2025 19:17

I wouldn’t assume you’d be naming her for the Queen no. I love the name and know a teen with it who is fantastic!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 30/04/2025 19:54

Camilla is much nicer than Camille

I don’t think people would seriously think you were calling her after Qu C - it’s not like she’s especially admired (though I have nothing against her).

StScholastica · 01/05/2025 08:34

It's a beautiful name and I'd assume you were using it despite it's associations with The Queen.

Although we did meet Camilla once (our dog ran after her party on a beach) and she was actually very sweet.

RaspberryBeretxx · 01/05/2025 08:44

I think it's lovely and was one of my final 3 for Dd. Didn't use it in the end as I prefer short forms that start with the beginning of the name and didn't like cam/cammie (totally personal preference, I wouldn't have an issue with someone else using camilla/millie). I think the older generation are much more aware of the negative side of the queen, it wouldn't be an issue for me. I also think it's a popular enough name that it doesn't seem like you're naming her after the queen.

SallySummerPop · 06/05/2025 00:28

I love it and wouldn't assume you'd named your baby after the royal, I much prefer Camilla to alternatives, nn Millie is nice. Lots of other famous Camilla's/Millie's come to mind too.

WildroseofGalway · 06/05/2025 00:43

Camilla is ok, I am in my fifties and wouldn’t associate it immediately with the Queen Consort, particularly if you are not posh! However, sorry to say I dislike the name Millie and don’t see it as an obvious nn for Camilla. In the area I grew up in, “Millie” was an insult, as in “You wee Millie” meaning a wee hard girl.

However I know that is not the case across the country! You do you, who cares!

Agree.

Classy, timeless and continental.

Millie isn't my favourite though. I'd call her either Camilla or Mila.

schoolsoutforever · 07/05/2025 21:09

Camilla is a really cool warrior woman from Virgil's Aeneid. Fantastic name. i like the queen too. Go for it BFWIW I don't like Millie or any similar diminutive Camilla is good ...maybe Cam for short? Or Mila?

Apollonia1 · 07/05/2025 21:16

I have a Camilla. No one ever mentions the Queen.
I love that everyone has heard of it, it’s easy to pronounce, but there aren’t that many Camillas. It also travels well internationally.

I use the full version, but had thought I might shorten it to Milly. But my daughter hates Milly and prefers Cami!

Whiteflowerscreed · 07/05/2025 21:18

It’s on my baby name list! I love it

Anyone under 40 seems to be fine with it. My parents and in laws hate it as they think of queen camilla and they all have a grudge against her. I quite like queen Camilla!

Congratulations, OP, and I'm glad that you have decided to stick to your guns!

Honestly, Camilla wouldn't make me think of the Royal Family. Queen Consort or not, I've always quietly liked the name Camilla (and Clarissa), courtesy of reading a lot of old-fashioned story books when I was little (blame Enid Blyton and the likes...). It is a fabulous name and she can be as regal as she likes with it when she is older!

DublinLaLaLa · 08/05/2025 14:49

I love it! A really classy name. Unusual without being too out there. I also like queen Camilla. I think it’s the older, Daily Mail reading crowd who just can’t get over Charles divorcing Saint Diana who dislike Camilla.

Agree it is generally people I’d say 50 plus that don’t like it x

I also quite like Queen Camilla, I don’t have a problem with her at all, it is just the older generation but like people have said by the time my Camilla grows up the queen probably won’t be around any more x
