What do you think about Anna? It’s my favourite girls name but wanted views from others too.

Anne is lovely - and very unusual these days

It isn’t. It’s popular, though not as much as Annie

Teacher 6 years; Social Worker for 3- can only think of three ‘Anne’s’ I’ve come across in all these years. ( the child not their mum that is)

Better to have a name that’s bland/boring/unexciting than one which will show your age, social background or even nationality imo - there seems to be a lot of benefits to a classic, timeless name like Anna.

Anna would be near the top of my list if we didn’t already have one in the family (she is mixed nationality- Anna was chosen precisely because it works well in so many countries).

I’m not keen on more “stand out” names myself - just because the parent wants to be different doesn’t necessarily mean their child will feel the same way. I love a lot of quite unusual/uncommon names - but personally I think it’s fairer to give them to my pets than my DC. DC can always choose an unusual nickname instead of their name if they want to stand out, plenty of celebs do.

CoalTit · 27/04/2025 00:33

I think it would be a great name to have; it's classic, pretty and practical, doesn't need much explaining or spelling out, and doesn't lead to assumptions or speculation about her parent's personality or background the way more fashionable, creative names do.

PluckyBamboo · 27/04/2025 00:34

I love Anna and Annabel (on MN and in RL).

Vitrolinsanity · 27/04/2025 00:37

Fabulous

Daffodilsarefading · 27/04/2025 00:42

Fabulous. Timeless, classic.

Pices · 27/04/2025 01:01

Anna is gorgeous but I’d definitely go for something a wilder and less common for a middle name like Anna Persephone

Pemba · 27/04/2025 01:08

Anna is also my favourite girls' name (and there are many I love).

Sorry to annoy that poster but yes classic AND timeless! Also internationally known, simple, elegant and feminine. And yes, easy for a child to learn to write.

It’s a nice name but very boring. I know 2 Anna’s who both dislike their name because they say it’s boring. I’d probably use it as a middle name instead of first.

Only about 400 Annas born last year! So hardly popular…

EmotionallyWeird · 27/04/2025 21:23

I like it! I think it has a bit of a cool, international feel while still fitting in perfectly with UK traditions.

PlumFairies · 27/04/2025 21:25

Love it, as long as it’s pronounced Anna and not Arna like in Frozen 🤣

Vivienne1000 · 27/04/2025 21:27

I love it. It will always be a classic name and never go out of fashion. Trendy names are often disliked in 20 years time.

orangemouth · 27/04/2025 21:48

I have a 9 year old Anna. She's the only child Anna we know and she likes how easy it is to spell. She does get asked if her name is Hannah quite a lot. I'm loving all the positive comments on this post!

villainousbroodmare · 27/04/2025 21:52

Love.

Pinkyhere · 28/04/2025 11:33

I love it. Would have used it for a second dd. Our daughter is called Ella bc we live outside UK and wanted a name that would travel easily. Think Anna is similarly short, elegant, simple and works in many languages

singswithitsfingers · 28/04/2025 11:36

Would have been on my short list had I had a daughter.

Eenameenadeeka · 28/04/2025 11:40

I like it but I love Annabelle, and I love that there are so many nicknames for Annabelle that she could choose.

Emanwenym · 28/04/2025 12:06

i don't like Annabelle. It is too frilly, and any 'nicknames' are likely to be Anna, Annie, Belle, Bella, Elle, Ellie.
Anna, Ann or Annie are fine, but the -belle/-bella trend seems overdone.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 28/04/2025 12:13

Lovely name. Don't know where you're moving to but it's currently a top 10 name in France and various other European countries.

PrueLeithsChunkyNecklace · 28/04/2025 12:16

I'm in my 40's and I love the name Anna. Classic, timeless and a change from some of the usual girls names that have been popular for the last 10-15 years. Also a really good name if you will be moving about internationally, as easy to pronounce in a lot of languages.

abricotine · 28/04/2025 12:19

I love it. Also Ana for anyone with Spanish connections.
Not so keen on Anne which I find rather dated and austere for some reason!

1SillySossij · 28/04/2025 12:22

I think it's too dull and colourless, also the Annas I know have all been a bit wet and feeble , so that puts me off.
