Gave birth to a lovely baby boy four days ago. Thrilled to bits but poor little DS still has no name. We’ve really struggled to narrow down the names this pregnancy so thought we’d wait until he was born to pick a name, but he doesn’t look like any particular name? We’ve got 10 on our shortlist but just can’t seem to make a decision. Please help! Big sister is Elizabeth.
Options for this baby are:
Nathaniel
Philip
August
George
Tobias
Alexander
Monty
Lachlan
Charlie
Micah

Love Elizabeth.
From your list, love Alexander and Nathaniel. Love Nate.
( I'm loving Peter atm).

Easterbabes · 24/04/2025 18:58

Thanks so much everyone! Given us lots to think about and we’ve discounted Lachlan and Micah. I think the issue we’re having is for some of the names we absolutely love the longer form but don’t really like the nickname most commonly used. We love Nathaniel but don’t like Nate, love Tobias but don’t care much for Toby, love Alexander but don’t like Alex. I suppose we can’t really insist on the longer version once he’s at school though. On the flip side, we love Charlie and Monty, but don’t like the longer forms of those names. I guess that leaves Philip (love Pip!), August (quite like Gus) and George, but all those feel quite royal with Elizabeth?

Oh and middle name will be Alexander if we don’t use it as a first name.

@Easterbabes , I know some couples who are Andrew and Sarah, Phil and Liz, and siblings who are William and Harry. It's not an issue.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/04/2025 19:06

What about Owen? Can't shorten Owen.

Emanwenym · 24/04/2025 19:07

@TomatoSandwiches , Oh yes you can. Owi.

@TomatoSandwiches , Oh yes you can. Owi.

I've never heard that one, how do you pronounce it? Like " Owen has an Ow-wee "

Zeitumschaltung · 24/04/2025 19:10

I wouldn’t intentionally have a Philip and an Elizabeth.
Nathaniel is great.
I would expect that August will get mispronounced and mistaken for a girl’s name if that’s something that concerns you.

ThelastRolo20 · 24/04/2025 19:11

What about Xander as a nickname for Alexander? Also love August

milkshakeman · 24/04/2025 19:13

George, Tobias or Alexander

Goandygo · 24/04/2025 19:17

@ThelastRolo20 agree, Xander is a great short name for Alexander.

Emanwenym · 24/04/2025 19:24

Rhymes with Snowy and Showy. Usually short for Owain.

Emanwenym · 24/04/2025 19:28

Forgot the proof:

It's from the credits of a TV soap (UK)

Alexander is probably my favourite boys names and I think sounds lovely with Elizabeth (also love this name!)

Otherwise Nathaniel would be my 2nd choice.

Congratulations!

Same here!

Summertimeblahness · 24/04/2025 19:41

Congratulations! I love August and Monty.

Not keen on Phillip!

TomatoSandwiches · 24/04/2025 19:44

Emanwenym · 24/04/2025 19:24

Rhymes with Snowy and Showy. Usually short for Owain.

I may have to use that now on my 17yr old 😁 I just thought, you could shorten it to Win/wyn as well, my husband has a Welsh name that you could nn Wyn also but never have.

steelingmyself · 24/04/2025 19:47

I think Alexander goes best with Elizabeth and it’s a good, strong, timeless name.

If you like Nathaniel but not Nate or Nat it could be shortened to Nathan?

Dillshair · 24/04/2025 19:50

George or Phillip for me. Have never liked the name Alex.I throw in Barnaby or Jonathan.

Pricelessadvice · 24/04/2025 19:56

Tobias (Obi for short- bit different to Toby)

Emanwenym · 24/04/2025 19:57

@TomatoSandwiches , you usually shorten Welsh names so that the stressed syllable (the next to last) is kept e.g. Bethan to Beth not An, Dilwyn to Dil not Wyn, Eluned to Lyn not El or Ed...
Llewelyn to Llew is an exception.

spring252 · 24/04/2025 20:08

While Pip is cute Philip is horribly dated and having an Elizabeth and Philip would be weird IMO.
I agree with others and like Alexander best.

MCCN · 24/04/2025 20:13

Alexander has lots of other shortenings if you don't like Alex - Al, Ali, Lex, Sandy, Sasha, Xan, Xander. Alistair is another lovely, similar sort of name.

Gus can be used for Magnus, Angus or Fergus if you're not sure about August.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 24/04/2025 20:16

I love Alexander or Nathaniel

Norastroud · 24/04/2025 20:19

Congratulations!

George Alexander is a lovely timeless name - love Georgie too

Also really like Tobias, I know one who always goes by Tobias - never shortened
