What's your immediate thoughts of the name Dacre? ( Pronounced Day-ker) Think it's lovely for a little boy but partner not convinced.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Makes me think of IKEA furniture and it would get pronounced Dak- Ra a lot

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 19/04/2025 10:29

In many accents it will sound like ‘daycare’. Choose a different name.

Darkclothes · 19/04/2025 10:29

In my head, I read it as Dak-ree,(similar to daiquiri) before you'd spelt out how you pronounce it.

Its certainly different, but a life long of spelling it out and correcting people.

MrsMitford3 · 19/04/2025 10:29

I have heard of one person with that name-an Australian actor from Stranger Things and I remember wondering how to say it when I first saw it.

I just feels/looks clunky to me.

I just know it as a village in North Yorkshire, but I suppose some people names are place names too!

Lascivious · 19/04/2025 10:33

Horrible.

Woodburnerisout · 19/04/2025 10:36

Paul Dacre, Daily Mail
No way Jose

Roselilly36 · 19/04/2025 10:36

No I don’t like it. I can imagine it causing problems re the pronunciation, day-ca-ree etc, don’t burden your child with that.

Woodburnerisout · 19/04/2025 10:37

Why just why

Catlord · 19/04/2025 10:38

Really not nice, sorry. Paul Dacre isn't exactly a shining example to live up to and it isn't a very nice sound.

LottieMary · 19/04/2025 10:47

Paul Dacre, and the estate agents .

I personally prefer Drury

getsomehelp · 19/04/2025 10:55

Why would you set up your child to have a lifelong problem explaining
How to pronounce and how to spell, every. single. time, only to be asked repeatedly, over & over. to spell it again.
Seriously, Stop trying to invent a designer name. Its painful.

SeventeenClovesOfGarlic · 19/04/2025 10:58

I don't understand how cre could be pronounced as ker?

Radiatorvalves · 19/04/2025 10:59

It’s a village in Yorkshire. Not a child’s name imho.

brombatz · 19/04/2025 11:02

Drury Lane?

Defo Paul Dacre came to mind but also it could get pronounced Dack ray, it would drive you potty.

LoopyLouLaLa · 19/04/2025 11:05

It’s an agricultural company in Bedford

ClaredeBear · 19/04/2025 11:05

Im sure it could grow on me but it looks like an acronym at first glance.

PlanetOtter · 19/04/2025 11:34

Of all the possible names in the world, that’s the one you want?

GeorgianaM · 19/04/2025 11:49

Ghastly, absolutely ghastly.

Same!

Cabbagefamily · 19/04/2025 11:54

The estate agents chain.
But it’s easily pronounced. I’m surprised people say they don’t know how to say it - it’s a common enough surname.
I actually don’t mind it.
