Sophie - name regret

Yellowtracktor · 04/04/2025 11:30

We really struggled for a name for my DD1 (already have a DS whose name I love). None of our shortlist seemed quite right when she was born, and my DH threw Sophie out as an option and I thought it suited her so went with it.

She's now 12 weeks and I'm just not sure... feels like I should have gone with a stronger name. Doesn't help that I've read so many threads on here calling it boring, bland and wet!

I have a few other names I definitely prefer now (I blame the post partum hormones for such a rush decision), but not sure I hate it enough to go through all the hassle and embarrassment of changing it...

Sophie is a beautiful name 😍

PickledElectricity · 04/04/2025 11:31

I know someone who changed her child's name 3 times! Try the new preferred name on fire size for a few weeks and if you want to keep it then go change it.

FWIW I think Sophie is a fine name, it's a classic.

loropianalover · 04/04/2025 11:32

People on here find everything boring, bland and wet! Sophie is a perfectly fine name, well known and good for a child or adult. I prefer it to Sofia.

OwlBasket · 04/04/2025 11:32

Sophie is a fantastic name. A timeless classic and a great choice. There isn’t a name in existence that hasn’t been slagged off in here. Honestly! You can check.

I had awful name regret, for me it was a symptom of PND

BlueskyCherrytrees · 04/04/2025 11:33

Sophie is a lovely classic name.

I wouldn’t have considered it bland or “wet” at all. It means “wisdom”.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 04/04/2025 11:33

I think it's lovely and it's one of my favourite girls names.

Coffeeishot · 04/04/2025 11:34

Sophie is a lovely name I can't see anything to regret.

Some of the names thrown about on threads I'm positive the posters are having a laugh !

2025willbemytime · 04/04/2025 11:34

It doesn't matter that other people think it's nice. If you don't, change it. You have time.

Bownessbay · 04/04/2025 11:38

Sophie is one of the most beautiful names for a girl \ woman IMO! It's gorgeous, Soph as a nn is nice too.

Obviously if you really don't like it try another as pp suggests and see, but it may be because you rushed it that you're having doubts? It's definitely not boring or bland, and a lot better than going with a current 'trendy' choice that will date. Sophie is timeless.

I have a French name I don't like and have often wished my parents had gone for Sophie instead!

mumonthehill · 04/04/2025 11:40

It is such a beautiful name. When you say it it just feels lovely.

Yellowtracktor · 04/04/2025 11:42

My 3 year old keeps calling her by her name which is very cute, and one or the reasons I'm hesitant to change it (which might sound stupid).

Sophie is a wonderful name.

Tipofthecattoes · 04/04/2025 11:44

Honestly, change it if you hate it. My friend did. We all laughed about the ridiculous of it (with her fully laughing too) and then moved on. 10yrs later and literally no-one is thinking about it. But she would be if it was a name she didn’t like

LemonChiffon · 04/04/2025 11:47

Sophie was my name for if ds had been a girl - I'm always a little sad I never got to use it! I personally much prefer it to Sophia, and I think it's an underused, beautiful name

Don't change it it's set now.

OperationalSupport · 04/04/2025 11:47

The little Sophie I know is anything but bland or wet, she’s a hurricane in human form.
Could Sophie be the middle name and add a new first name?

ADifferentSong · 04/04/2025 11:48

Sophie is such a beautiful name. But if you really can’t get used to it, could you relegate it to one of her middle names? Just don’t let the bland boring and wet group decide for you!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 04/04/2025 11:49

Always read it as 'soapy'...

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 04/04/2025 11:50

If you (and your DH) really want to change it then do so. Any palaver over it will soon be forgotten and most people won’t care (in a good way!). Don’t be embarrassed.

I like Sophie and I think it’s a strong name with some good characters, but ultimately it’s your decision.

littlemousebigcheese · 04/04/2025 11:51

Sophie is a beautiful name. I like quite out there names and usually can’t stand traditional ones yet Sophie is perfect to me. We call our friend sofa!

Coffeeishot · 04/04/2025 11:52

Do you have a name in mind?

Chunkilumptious · 04/04/2025 11:52

Is there name you prefer, or even a style you prefer?

I like classic names and Sophie is pleasant, soft, gentle and smart.

If you couldn't come up with a knockout alternative that you adore then perhaps the perfect name simply isn't your priority and you'd be happier accepting Sophie, and moving on, letting it fit your daughter's growing personality and not the other war round in the way that you think a more striking name might?

thesoundofwildgeese · 04/04/2025 11:53

Sophie is a lovely name.

I cannot understand the current angst over naming children.

Chunkilumptious · 04/04/2025 11:54

I mean I definitely don't think it's bland or wet. To me it says strong and clever woman with a gentle, soft sound.

Katiesaidthat · 04/04/2025 11:54

Elegant and timeless, I like this name. My daughter has Sofia as a second name.
