Sophie - name regret

We really struggled for a name for my DD1 (already have a DS whose name I love). None of our shortlist seemed quite right when she was born, and my DH threw Sophie out as an option and I thought it suited her so went with it.

She's now 12 weeks and I'm just not sure... feels like I should have gone with a stronger name. Doesn't help that I've read so many threads on here calling it boring, bland and wet!

I have a few other names I definitely prefer now (I blame the post partum hormones for such a rush decision), but not sure I hate it enough to go through all the hassle and embarrassment of changing it...

I have one other name mind. Don't want to share as I'm clearly very easily influenced..! It's a traditional/classic name which is less popular and longer, lending itself to a few different nicknames. It seemed like too grown up a name when my DD was born, but now I feel like that was probably quite shortsighted

Annabelle/a by any chance?

I love my 3 girls names but it’s the one name I’m often sad I didn’t get to use

(p.s Sophie is lovely too!)

Hols23 · 04/04/2025 12:41

I felt the same about my second child's name. I felt awkward saying it and it just didn't sound or feel right. However she's now 16 and I couldn't imagine her being called anything else!

Obviously change it if you want to, but I'm sure if you don't you'll grow to love it.

Endofyear · 04/04/2025 12:42

I think it's a beautiful name! And if your 3 year old is using it, wouldn't it be confusing to change her name now? I think babies names often feel odd at first and then they grow on you as you get used to them. Don't overthink it. It's a lovely name ☺️

theotherfossilsister · 04/04/2025 12:43

I think of Sophie’s World, or Sophie from the BFG. Both great characters for a name. I really like it.

IGetWeak · 04/04/2025 12:44

There isn’t a name in existence that hasn’t been slagged off in here. Honestly! You can check.

Yep! My name, which has been popular since the 90s and is (I always thought) pretty inoffensive, has featured on the most hated names threads, as has my favourite name (which I didn’t think was popular/known enough to inspire strong views either way). You’ll never find one that’s universally loved!

For what it’s worth, I think Sophie is classic name that isn’t in danger of dating, and which doesn’t have any negative connotations. I’d rather have that than something self-consciously fashionable that will date, or so “yoonique” that it sounds ridiculous.

Smallmercies · 04/04/2025 12:46

Change it to Sophonisba or Persephone, Sophie can be her nickname 🥰.

AtrociousCircumstance · 04/04/2025 12:46

Sophie is a truly lovely, classic name. I always associate it with beautiful women.

StMarie4me · 04/04/2025 12:47

Sophie is a gorgeous name! Pay no heed to the naysayers.

RhododendronFlowers · 04/04/2025 12:49

Sophie is a beautiful name!
It's a classic. Not ditzy, it won't date, and you find it in many cultures.
Don't change it.

Cocktailsandcheese · 04/04/2025 12:51

Absolutely beautiful name, one of my favourites!

Vipersgonnavipe · 04/04/2025 12:52

Sophie is a very pretty name, I don’t think it’s wet!
I know quite a few aged around 11 in my ds school, no little ones. They seem to be more likely to be a Sophia (aged around 7 or so).
It is a popular name for a reason, it’s classic and timeless. It won’t date.
But if you really don’t like it, try a week of calling your baby by the new name. See how it feels. Your ds will soon adapt if you do decide to change it.
Better to do it now while you can change it easily, than leave it and be disappointed for a lifetime.

Sophie is lovely.
But it matters not what others think.

Now that you have another name that you prefer, I would add that on as the first name - just bause you still easily can.

Newname Sophie Secondname surname.

Springadorable · 04/04/2025 13:00

If your other options are Victoria or Elizabeth, I prefer Sophie

yummyscummymummy01 · 04/04/2025 13:06

I had a bit of name regret with my daughter. I think for me it was a bit of a red flag as I was a bit depressed. I absolutely love her name now and even now she's older I get lots of compliments about it.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 04/04/2025 13:07

I like Sophie, its traditional. Does she have a middle name? or you could shorten it

Nooa · 04/04/2025 13:19

It's a lovely name! If it makes you feel better, I read a thread earlier where OP wants to call her child Tybalt. You, on the other hand, have gifted your daughter a lovely-sounding traditional name which will not be the cause of great misery for her (unlike the unfortunate Tybalt). Win!

Almahart · 04/04/2025 13:25

Honestly, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If you are not happy with it after 12 weeks then try out another name and see what you think.

I know someone who changed their babies name at about six months. No one batted an eyelid really. Far better that than to always have that slight disappointment

Judellie · 04/04/2025 13:25

Sophie is a beautiful name. I had a bride doll called Sophie. I'd forgott4en how lovely it is until I read this, would have been nice to use for DD's middle name - or even first name - but too late for me now as she's 18!

SeaContainers · 04/04/2025 13:27

We have a Sophie, we love it and she does she! She’s always getting people say how much they like the name too. Our Sophie is a late teen now and no regrets!

DuneFan · 04/04/2025 13:27

Sophie is a lovely name but if it's not right for her, change it now. Don't let Mumsnet bitchy comments (not on this thread which is lovely, on others) make your decision though.

My Ds name is disliked by mumsnet, it's apparently a dad name, bland, boring. I love it regardless and laugh when it gets slagged off on here!

Juicyprawns · 04/04/2025 13:31

I have a Sofie as I liked the name but wanted a different spelling. She is a little dynamo, funny smart and really kind. That said she was quiet and hardly uttered a sound for the first 6 months

Tybalt!! Shame, it's quite a nice sounding name but not really a future or temperament to aspire to. Maybe one for a cat. A prince of cats.

Barleysugar86 · 04/04/2025 13:36

I think Sophie is lovely. Maybe try reading some books with a Sophie in (queens nose I think, BFG?) and see how it feels reading about another girl named Sophie and imagine your little girl grown up?

Honestly Sophie was on my shortlist- I think it is soft but strong and more classy than Sophia to me. I wouldn't change it. I don't think any baby necessarily suits their name unless you have given them something a bit childish which won't grow well with them.

AtrociousCircumstance · 04/04/2025 12:46

I love that - I am a Sophie and by no means a beautiful woman. But I'm definitely not bland, boring or wet either!

BoleynMemories13 · 04/04/2025 16:20

Sophie is an absolute classic, popular for a reason. Ignore the comments. You'll never please everyone with a name. It's easy for people to make throw away comments about a potential name online, it's very different to making a comment to your face about an actual name you've chosen. I'm assuming people don't do that? Who cares what strangers online think of a name? People who post on here do not reflect the opinions of everyone. Popular names get dissed on here all the time, yet there's a reason they remain popular... most people away from Mumsnet Baby Names forum love them!
