Sophie - name regret

We really struggled for a name for my DD1 (already have a DS whose name I love). None of our shortlist seemed quite right when she was born, and my DH threw Sophie out as an option and I thought it suited her so went with it.

She's now 12 weeks and I'm just not sure... feels like I should have gone with a stronger name. Doesn't help that I've read so many threads on here calling it boring, bland and wet!

I have a few other names I definitely prefer now (I blame the post partum hormones for such a rush decision), but not sure I hate it enough to go through all the hassle and embarrassment of changing it...

My 3 year old keeps calling her by her name which is very cute, and one or the reasons I'm hesitant to change it (which might sound stupid).

Your 3 year old will follow suit with you. There’s still time to change it. I think if you have doubts you should at least consider other names. I like Sophie btw but you’re clearly not sure.

MinnieCoops · 04/04/2025 11:58

Honestly I’m not a fan BUT it’s not my baby. If you think you could get used to it keep it but you’ve plenty of time to change abs maybe keep Sophie as a middle name.

what other names are you thinking of?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 04/04/2025 11:58

It's lovely & timeless. I'd have used it but it didn't flow well with our surname.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 04/04/2025 11:59

Do you love love? Love any of the new names as much as you love your D's name??

If you do, then I'd change it, so what if people I roll she's a few weeks old, it'll soon be relegated to a story from when you were a tiny baby.

She will have the name either Sophie or the new one for her whole life, maybe 100 years, what's a few weeks???

I personally think Sophie is pretty, timeless & elegant. But it really doesn't matter what any of us think, it's about what you think!!

As for your DS that sounds really cute, but it won't take him any time if you give her a different name and just tell him that you thought the new name suited her more.

Honestly, changing it is only a big deal in your head, as I said, she might have it for the next hundred years, and you'll be using it daily for years, if you really love another one more then change it

It's really really really easy to do in the first 12 months.

Almahart · 04/04/2025 12:00

Try another name and see. It's definitely not too late to change it if you're not happy

SophieAnt · 04/04/2025 12:00

I love the name Sophie (it's my current MN name although not my name IRL). Beautiful, timeless and with a lovely meaning. Keep the name and stop reading other people's opinions on it- there is no name which is universally popular so whatever you choose there will be someone who doesn't like it.

Yellowtracktor · 04/04/2025 12:03

I have one other name mind. Don't want to share as I'm clearly very easily influenced..! It's a traditional/classic name which is less popular and longer, lending itself to a few different nicknames. It seemed like too grown up a name when my DD was born, but now I feel like that was probably quite shortsighted

Dd is a Sophie

I chose it because its a solid, timeless and pretty name

Never heard it called 'wet' it's gorgeous

It means wisdom-and she lives up to it

nicred · 04/04/2025 12:04

Sophie is a great name, middle name for my LG because the BFG was my fave book as a child and Sophie is such a wonderful strong and brave character

Topseyt123 · 04/04/2025 12:05

Take what you read on here with a fair sized pinch of salt sometimes.

Sophie is a beautiful name.

What name do you prefer? Perhaps add that as middle name.

suah · 04/04/2025 12:06

Sophie is a beautiful name. Sophia was top of my list until my DB and SIL pipped me to it!

If you (and your DH) really want to change it then do so. Any palaver over it will soon be forgotten and most people won’t care (in a good way!). Don’t be embarrassed.

I like Sophie and I think it’s a strong name with some good characters, but ultimately it’s your decision.

It doesn't matter whether they care or not, in any way. This is not their baby.

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/04/2025 12:09

Sophie is a lovely name - it was on my list for DD2 and I think it would have suited her. I think you should stick with it 😊

SingingSands · 04/04/2025 12:10

I love the name Sophie as it is really timeless, elegant and classy and works well in other languages. I think it has a quiet strength. I love that it means "wisdom".

Sometimes you see a bad "review" on Mumsnet and it sticks with you and niggles, because you want everything to be perfect for your baby.

I have a Sophie - she is 21 now and I've never regretted her name. I saw the "boring, bland and wet" comment last week and thought it was a ridiculous thing to say and probably said more about the poster!

DuskyPink1984 · 04/04/2025 12:12

Sophie is my favourite girls name. I have a French name myself, which I love.

It is chic, classic and beautiful.

ItGhoul · 04/04/2025 12:13

I know two Sophies and neither of them are in the slightest bit bland and wet! In fact, one of them is a former Army officer, a keen footballer and quite possibly the least bland/wet person I know.

Honestly, it won't be her name that shapes her personality. It's a lovely name anyway.

CosyNavyLeader · 04/04/2025 12:14

I think it's a lovely name. You don't hear it that often these days, so when she grows up she may find her name to be quite unique in the sense that not many others her age have it.

AutumnScream · 04/04/2025 12:14

Have you never heard of Sophie Scholl? The least wet person who ever lived. She was incredible and its a lovely timeless name that spans countries and decades.

WinterFoxes · 04/04/2025 12:17

I adore that name. If we'd had a girl, it would have been my first choice. It means wisdom. Great name for a girl. Not wet or bland at all. And classic, not a name that trends and falls out of fashion.

ItGhoul · 04/04/2025 12:18

Oh, I've just remembered another Sophie I used to know - my amazing great-aunt. Strongest, funniest, smartest woman you could imagine. She got through some astonishing hardships throughout her life, starting with being born in a slum in the 1910s. She was brilliant. Also amazingly glamorous despite leading a bloody tough life.

BelleDeJourRose · 04/04/2025 12:19

The person who said its wet might like awful names

cestlaviecherie · 04/04/2025 12:28

She can always change it herself when she's older but I bet she won't.

Emanwenym · 04/04/2025 12:30

I love the name Sophie but couldn't use it as my cousin had a Sophie first. @Yellowtracktor

As someone with a name but goes by one of several possible 'nicknames', I can assure you, it's not that great.

It's ot wet at all. (My cousin's DD is anything but - she's very confident and capable).

It’s a beautiful and classic name that has stood the test of time.
