Sophie - name regret

We really struggled for a name for my DD1 (already have a DS whose name I love). None of our shortlist seemed quite right when she was born, and my DH threw Sophie out as an option and I thought it suited her so went with it.

She's now 12 weeks and I'm just not sure... feels like I should have gone with a stronger name. Doesn't help that I've read so many threads on here calling it boring, bland and wet!

I have a few other names I definitely prefer now (I blame the post partum hormones for such a rush decision), but not sure I hate it enough to go through all the hassle and embarrassment of changing it...

I love Sophie. It’s classic for a reason.
As your DS can say the name, it would take time for him to get used to a new name but not impossible.
ime mine just became their name, but if you feel it doesn’t suit her, then do change it.
People will have opinions on any name

I think babies names sometimes need to grow on you.
Sophie is a lovely classic name.

Springhassprungthesunisout · 04/04/2025 16:51

My 5yo niece is Sophie and fiesty. No way is she bland or wet!

I think Sophie is lovely. Maybe try reading some books with a Sophie in (queens nose I think, BFG?) and see how it feels reading about another girl named Sophie and imagine your little girl grown up?

Honestly Sophie was on my shortlist- I think it is soft but strong and more classy than Sophia to me. I wouldn't change it. I don't think any baby necessarily suits their name unless you have given them something a bit childish which won't grow well with them.

The Grand Sophy, by Georgette Heyer, also has an excellent Sophy as its main character- independent, confident , warm. I’ve loved the name ever since I read the book, many years ago at the age of about sixteen

Firsttimebabymummy · 05/04/2025 09:32

Sophie is a nice name.
However, change it if you want to.

EmotionallyWeird · 05/04/2025 21:57

I really like Sophie but I think it you want to change it, it's better to do it early. Only do it if you are confident that you strongly prefer your new choice.

For what it's worth, I had exactly the same problem with my DC1's name nearly 30 years ago - felt it was a bit bland and unadventurous, but stuck with it and it feels perfectly right now, I can't imagine them being called anything else.

We chose Sophie as the middle name for myy eldest, I think it's a lovely name. In fact when we had DD2 we regretted using it as we would've probably called it her if we hadn't!

hideawayforever · 05/04/2025 22:35

Soohie is gorgeous

MaryGreenhill · 05/04/2025 23:29

Sophie is a beautiful name . My Dd2 is called Sophie . We called her a variety of names of course . Sophs , Sophie , Soppy , Fie and Fifi .

MaryGreenhill · 05/04/2025 23:30

Oh yes and Sosie ❤️😁

Sassybooklover · 26/04/2025 22:09

Yes, Sophie is popular and she's likely to have more than one in her class at school. However, it's not pretentious, weird, spelt strangely that she'll spend her entire life having to spell it out to everyone, or is pronounced oddly (just to be different!) and won't get teased because of it! Sophie is a nice, normal, classic name.

abracadabra1980 · 26/04/2025 22:21

Sophie is one of the classic English names that will never date. Also, it doesn't matter that what you name your child, someone else won't like it.

HouseCaptain · 26/04/2025 22:29

Sophie is lovely - classic and pretty. It’s not the most exciting or trendy name, but it will last a lifetime and neve be a source of embarrassment.

AllTangledUpInDaisiesAndDiadems · 26/04/2025 22:30

Sophie is a lovely name.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 26/04/2025 22:30

Sophie is a beautiful name op.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 26/04/2025 22:31

Also I only know lovely Sophies!

YorkshireIndie · 27/04/2025 08:08

I wanted to name my DS Sophie if he had been a girl but would never have been able to as it was the name of my cousin’s stillborn baby

itsgettingweird · 27/04/2025 08:10

Sophie was my list - I had a boy!

I now have a SIL called Sophie!

lovely timeless classic.

But if you don't like it for your DD then you have every right to change it.

Roselilly36 · 27/04/2025 08:12

I have always liked the name Sophie. It’s a great choice.

Yellowtracktor · 04/04/2025 12:03

I have one other name mind. Don't want to share as I'm clearly very easily influenced..! It's a traditional/classic name which is less popular and longer, lending itself to a few different nicknames. It seemed like too grown up a name when my DD was born, but now I feel like that was probably quite shortsighted

Elizabeth and Margaret are both lovely names too.

BunnyRuddington · 27/04/2025 08:16

Sophie is fine but I hear Sally in Coronation Street pronouncing it every time I hear it.

I thought she meant Elizabeth as an alternative too!

But Sophie Elizabeth would be a great name if you added a middle name instead!

DisforDarkChocolate · 27/04/2025 09:56

I think Sophie is a classic name, very lovely and not wet at all.

Sorry - meant to quote the poster who mentioned Sally Webster.

Haha luckily I don't think this will be an issue for the next generation.

I'm not worried about there being multiples in her class either. Sophie was only about 30th on the list of most popular girls names last year. Although I know Sophia/Sofia is top 10. But even so, it's not a big concern.

It's been a few weeks since I posted this and I'm still unsure, but as time goes on it seems less likely that I'll end up changing it.

This is what put me off using Rosie 😂

Although my DD loves the name and wishes that I had called her it!
