Just wondering? I have always liked Tabitha, Martha, sebastian. I know an Arthur and Monty. What would you class as a posh name and also as an embarrasing name!

Mountjoy
Gaylord
Lindsey
StJohn (Sinjun)

I'm snorting at Tuppy, too.

I'd say Dinny and Bunny were posh (my Granny had friends with these names, and they were definitely posh). She also had a friend called Badger, so that's probably posh too.

I went to school with a Mungo, he was a bit posh. I never saw him with Mary or Midge either

I think Sheherazade (sp?) is a jolly posh girl's name

My mother teaches at a very posh girls school and every year its fun to hear all the latest names. A lot of very old names are coming back. Just a sample of what she's had over the years:
Agnes
Dulcie
Ottilie
Camilla (lots!)
Antonia (lots!)
Clemmie (short for Clementine)
India
Venetia
Lottie (short for Charlotte)
Celia

The girls tend to have brothers along the lines of:
Benedict
Sebastian
Rupert
Theo
Harry
Thomas

Not quite the level of Crispin, Tarquin or Peregrine but we are sure one will come along eventually!

I think for me the moment I hear someone who is defintely not posh name, their child a posh name then the name loses its cachet. Examples include:

Neville
Horace
Lavinia
India
Johnny
Ptolemy

Prince Edward's children are Louise and James!

When Beatrice and Eugenie were chosen they were so unfashionable it was shocking. Hard to imagine why now. I can't think of anything so unfashionable now.

Definitely Jolyon, Hugo, Martha, Ottilie, Eleanor, Arabella, Jemima, Romilly and Rupert. There's also lots of Violet and Scarlett in the Torygraph, usually as sisters.

And despite being very popular across the board, Emily still feels very posh.

A relative of mine married a Featherstone but they don't pronounce it feerstun. She just says Featherstone! which sounds posh enough to my ear!

That 66 yr old mother chose Jolyon for her son. Risky imo. Everybody will know instantly oh he is the son of the old mum. If she'd called him Jacob she would have given him a little protection from that instant identification.

I saw that he was called Jolyon. I don't think it's risky at all, the name I mean! He's probably going to run in circles with other Jolyons and Ptolemys, Ruperts etc.. anyway.

I will add Edmund, Florence, Ralph/Rafe, Kitty, Montgomery and Fleur to my list.

My brother is Lars, our friends who are twins are Miles and Mars.

Great Grandfather : Augustus
Grand father: Alwin Charles

Cousins: Alanna, Ebba, Samuel Joseph, Charles, George, Bryony,

My mother wanted to call me Narcisus or Camilla.

I've always liked the names Thibaut for a boy and evelyn (Effie), or Jemima for a girl... but with Jemima I fear could be shorterned to Gemma.

Why do they have to be labelled (as 'posh')...

Just in the last 2 years, since the thread started, a lot of names on here have become quite 'standard' and not posh at all imo e.g. Sebastian, Arthur, Quentin, Theo, Eleanor, Claudia etc. I guess this is what Freakonomics predicts .

Came looking at baby names wondering about a name we were just discussing in abstract.

On reflection it could really only ever see the light of day on this thread. Grin

Ataraxia.

nice concept, if unlikely name.... spose Serena could've cut it as an acceptable substitute in the days before shrieking tennis players

None of the OP names are posh!

I'm not sure there is such thing as a posh name any more.

Maybe Hestor, Hermione,Marina, Rupert and Hugo will be forever posh.

But I doubt it, because I love Rupert and Hugo, and would definitely use them, and I seem to know exactly what will be in the top 10 names in 5 years time.

Really posh people only call their child James, Edward or Octavia, though, don't they.

Juno, Edward, Hermione and Elizabeth; here are some seriously posh kids
