Just wondering? I have always liked Tabitha, Martha, sebastian. I know an Arthur and Monty. What would you class as a posh name and also as an embarrasing name!

I should have said posh, but not necessarily embarrassing.

Cecil too, oh and Hillary (for a boy)

LOL at Tuppy, see Jeeves and Wooster for some great posh nicknames, then work backwards to get the original.

Malachy aint posh these days, most of the obscure biblical ones are a bit c-word. Like the Dingles in Emmerdale.

Greek myth names aren't posh posh (ie upper class), it's middle class Guardian reader pretension.

No it's a name really, honest!

It's said por-sha. The daughter in A Fish Called Wanda is Porche.

("Oh, do shut up, Porche!")

Or maybe you spell it Porsche? That looks better actually. Hmmm.

Yes Lovebuckets

IMO the ridiculous names are posh, as are nicknames like Tuppy and Tiggy and the really classic ones like Constance and Charles.

But names like Araminta and Phineas etc are more middle class pretentious than actual upper class posh

Well only two of my daughter's names have appeared on this thread. I am most concerned - does this mean dd2 doesn't have a posh name as well?

There's a little Quentin at ds's nursery and his family are certainly NOT posh...

What about Antigone (Tiggy) - that sounds quite 'posh' to my ears.

A-ha! Vindicated!

"The girl's name Porsche \p(o)-rs-che, por-sche\ is a variant of Porsha.
The baby name Porsche sounds like Porscha, Porschia and Porcha. Other similar baby names are Pascha and Psyche.
Porsche is an uncommon female first name and a very rare surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census)."
(From this web page)

Also my DP knows a aristocrat in RL called Porsche. He says it's seriously posh, originally German, particularly Hanoverian. Other examples of Hanoverians include - let's see - the Queen! Doesn't get much more posh than that really.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it BoysAreLikeDogs

Bugger, I meant AN aristocrat!

Podrick · 26/05/2009 18:36

Well if you really mean posh then logically that is royalty and the aristocracy.

Anyone know the roll call of names for the new generation of them?

Beatrice, Eugenie I always thought those were hideous choices only posh people could like 'em , I reckon.

Verity, Theo, Luca: Many popular choices on MN, actually!!

The name Porsche as in the car(if that is how you spell it-sorry can't check as I only drive a Ford)-was the family surname and that family is extremly posh

Both of my kids names are on this thread.

I wouldn't class either as posh. Unusual, perhaps.

I don't think I can classify any name as posh. actually. It's more the nicknames I fond baffing!
