Morning, trying to work out if this is a good idea or if baby brain is sending me actually crazy haha.

I have a DS named Wren. We're now expecting #2, and there's a name I just can't get out my head. I've never heard anyone in our lives called this, but I'm worried that's because it's not a real name haha.

I absolutely love the idea of naming this little one Sparrow. Tell me (gently haha) if I'm mad, but I just love it.

DH loves Robin, but I already know of two Robin's.

@LaundryPond oh I just mean for syllables and beginning with M haha, that's all for similarity!

Tree names are good for boys if you want to continue on a nature theme.
Rowan is a lovely name (I think) and, I think, unisex, although I've only known male Rowans.

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/02/2025 10:20

Wren for a boy? Bet he loves that when he’s older. Especially if he turns out to be a 6 foot 4 rugby player, lol. Glad you like it anyway.
Sparrow defo has ‘poor, little sparrow’ vibe attached to it for me, not great.
Nature names can be lovely - god, choosing is a minefield though isn’t it. Good luck with baby number 2

I think I'd consider the name Rowan more, but I already know a female Rowan who was a huge personality (the only goth in the school so made a big impact, go her!) so I think I'd just think of her!

Colt would be a great name to go with Wren 😊

It's honestly quite common for a boys name too, I'm so surprised by these comments slating his name! I know of a few little ones called Wren now, but I actually discovered the name from an adult man called Wren. He was on a YouTube video and loads of comments were the same as m, saying what a great name it was! I'd never thought of it as a girls name. Didn't expect any of the comments on the name Wren!

It is an absolute minefield this baby name business haha.

Marjorie

it has the M
go for it

HoraceCope · 10/02/2025 10:30

or there is always Margo

OnlyWhenILaugh · 10/02/2025 10:37

What about May? It's the blossom of the Hawthorn tree. Overused as a middle name but I think a lovely first name - pure and simple with a beautiful nature connection

dontforgetme · 10/02/2025 10:37

I love the name Wren op, for a boy or girl!

I had loads of stick for my baby names being unisex.

If I had a third right now it would be Emma or Joel. I absolutely love the name Joel, it never entered my head when I had my son but after watching The Last of Us a few years back I can't get it out of my head!

I absolutely agree about it being a total minefield naming your babies!

Thank you so much! This is lovely especially after some of these comments!

I totally get you on the name Joel, I find it really quite cool. Maybe I'm thinking of Billy Joel and that's why I'm associating it with being very cool but that's a definite compliment haha!

High Sparrow association ?

HoratioBum · 10/02/2025 11:28

I'm not sure about Sparrow, it's not a very robust sounding name -I'm not sure I could take a 6 foot man seriously if he was called Sparrow. It's very much a name for a child, not an adult, imo

Raven could be a boy or a girl, although Starling, which is lovely seems to suit a girl more.

I know I'm not being very PC by gendering names, but a lot of bird names seem quite fragile sounding. Apart from Ostrich or Emu!

lovelydayIhave · 10/02/2025 12:11

Willow
Summer
April
Rose
Rosemary - Mary Rose

Waterboatlass · 10/02/2025 09:21

Jay, Martin, Robin, I actually think Starling is quite beautiful. Petrel and Skua are kind of cool. Do you actually like particularly birds though or is it just a naming theme?

Other nice possibilities are Tit, Woodcock, Little Bustard or Shag.

😅😅

HugoYorway · 10/02/2025 12:44

Has anyone suggested Thrush?

Sherararara · 10/02/2025 12:47

Batman?

sorry, bats aren’t birds. I’ll retract that.

Wren's a lovely name for a boy or a girl, and I really don't understand why people comment on existing children's names, there's literally no point.

Other ideas - Linden, River, Heath, Pippin, Kit, Bluebell, Meadow, Blossom (the last more for girls). Mabel is really nice.

GreeneryGrass · 10/02/2025 12:59

@BootballJoy thank you so much for this. I really appreciate it, it feels a bit crap defending a two year old on his name (that's been his name his whole life). We love his name, everyone who knows him as a person loves his name and thinks it suits him and that's what matters.

I really love your suggestions too, thank you!

I love the name Merle. It's a bird name that's not too obvious.

Chuchoter · 10/02/2025 13:04

Some accents will pronounce it as

Sparra.

Get a grip and call them a name that won't incur ridicule.

What's wrong with Thrush? 😬

CherryMarigold · 10/02/2025 13:30

ChannelFiveDrama · 10/02/2025 08:17

Sparrow isn't a great choice but even more bizarre alongside a Wren. People will think you're bonkers. Or Bill Oddie.

Bill Oddie has really made me laugh
🤣🤣🤣

Sorry OP but Sparrow is not the one. I love Wren and Robin but I don't think you should have another obvious bird name, it's far too themey.

TheGirlWhoLived · 10/02/2025 13:35

I love Atticus. My little boys middle name is Loxley which is pretty unisex! Mean sort of a grassy/lightly wooded area or field- like Robin of Loxley

OnLockdown · 10/02/2025 13:36

I know a Finch (boy). Wren and Finch go well together. Sparrow is a bit too out there.
