Morning, trying to work out if this is a good idea or if baby brain is sending me actually crazy haha.

I have a DS named Wren. We're now expecting #2, and there's a name I just can't get out my head. I've never heard anyone in our lives called this, but I'm worried that's because it's not a real name haha.

I absolutely love the idea of naming this little one Sparrow. Tell me (gently haha) if I'm mad, but I just love it.

DH loves Robin, but I already know of two Robin's.

I think you might regret it. As unique as it is!

what about Phoenix?

custardpyjamas · 10/02/2025 09:23

Go for cuckoo, that will get the neighbours talking!

Sparrow sounds like a small, thin hungry child to me, not sure where the association comes from.

Others have suggested a few nice ones.

JudgeBread · 10/02/2025 09:23

I think it's cute, it reminds me of Fable II, the Player character was "little Sparrow". I think it's one of those "love it but never use it" names though, I can't imagine a grown man (or woman?) called Sparrow.

Choose a more conventional name and then if you still love the idea of Sparrow once the baby is born you could refer to him/her has your little sparrow as an affectionate nickname.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I think it's going to be my nickname for them. It's been a really hard pregnancy so far - I've been in hospital and in my head when fearing the worst I've been referring to them in my head as my little Sparrow so I think it's becoming really special to me. (very much not in the clear yet but so far the baby is still doing good thankfully which is what we're focusing on!)

go with Willow

HoraceCope · 10/02/2025 09:27

or Jay
or Raven

custardpyjamas · 10/02/2025 09:27

You could go for flowers instead, particularly if it's a girl, Iris, Violet, Rose...

Duckyfondant · 10/02/2025 09:28

Little sparrow is an adorable nickname. I agree with a less themed official name. Love Wren for a boy as well.

I think this comment has cemented the decision for me - not sure my desired effect is thin, hungry looking child 🤣 fantastic. Yeah there's some really good ideas here, definitely some to add to my list for sure!

To answer a couple of other questions, I do like birds but honestly it was that we loved the name Wren for our first, especially when during the pregnancy there were loads of wren's around us quite a lot so they just reminded me of him!
Then this time, my husband has always loved the name Robin. I'm not quite so sold on it, but I was always just a little worried about having two bird names because I didn't want it to seem like we had to stick to a theme but rather we just loved the names. But then sparrow happened and I was thrown! Definitely not having sparrow on the birth certificate though, worry not!

Oh no, I know someone whose girls are both named after jewels. It’s just silly.

That said, Robin is the only other suggestion that I like, but I still wouldn’t use bird names for both children.

Is DS a typo? Wren is a girls name surely?

Nope! Lovely little boy 😊 I've since heard of a few boys called Wren! It's lovely for either boy or girl. Suits him perfectly too!

I know someone with a little girl called Sparrow. It wouldn't be my choice at all. But it has been used before!

ShushImTalking · 10/02/2025 09:37

Apparently the wren is the most populous bird in the UK. But they are so tiny and fast you hardly see them.

I like tree names, particularly Rowan and Ash.

Jessieshome · 10/02/2025 09:38

There's a beautiful Dolly Parton song called Little Sparrow.

But no, no I wouldn't name a child that, maybe a middle name if you're totally hooked on it!

I'll have to have a listen! I had no idea it was a song. Thanks 😊

I was going to suggest a tree name like rowan too. It would compliment Wren without it being too in your face.

I know a boy called Bramble.
I know a boy called Fox too which I really don't like.
Some nature names are good, some less so!

See I like Fox! I wouldn't actually call a human it but I do like it! Nature names are so hit or miss, haha. Thanks

Willow wren is the old name for a willow warbler.

Mavis is another name for the song thrush.

Magpie comes from the name Maggie / Margaret, Jackdaws were originally just called daws.

Goandygo · 10/02/2025 10:01

Wren and Rowan
Wren and Raven
Wren and Iris

I absolutely LOVE the name Mavis - how have I never thought of this before!? I won't put our last name online but I'll just say it would work really nicely with our last name too.

Similar two syllable name that I love for a girl (but my husband isn't so sold on) is Mabel. Feel like they're similar!

I’d have said Mabel was a reclaimed old-fashioned name, and Mavis was definitely not! They have completely opposite vibes for me.
