Morning, trying to work out if this is a good idea or if baby brain is sending me actually crazy haha.

I have a DS named Wren. We're now expecting #2, and there's a name I just can't get out my head. I've never heard anyone in our lives called this, but I'm worried that's because it's not a real name haha.

I absolutely love the idea of naming this little one Sparrow. Tell me (gently haha) if I'm mad, but I just love it.

DH loves Robin, but I already know of two Robin's.

Hi I have to be honest i think that it's not a very good name to call a little child sparrow,
I'm so sorry

Don't be sorry! I would hate to call a little person something that they'd go on to dislike so I'm all ears 😊 I could always make it my little nickname for them!

Gently, you are mad.

There are other bird names. Phoenix. Lark. Hawk. Don't know what sex you're expecting.

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/02/2025 08:13

Wren is beautiful and so is Robin. Sparrow is a really bad idea, sorry!

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 10/02/2025 08:14

Jay.
Peregrine 😆
Falco
Drake
Finch (I like this one)
Martin
Rook
Oriole

ChannelFiveDrama · 10/02/2025 08:17

Sparrow isn't a great choice but even more bizarre alongside a Wren. People will think you're bonkers. Or Bill Oddie.

user1492757084 · 10/02/2025 08:26

Martin
Peregrine
Hawk

Maggie
Jenny
Polly

This thread is making me laugh so much. I'm so glad I posted here, this is the wake up call I so badly needed 🤣. When my husband suggested Robin (he likes the sound of Wren & Robin together) I was like "it's too on the nose, two bird names is too much" but then I went feral for Sparrow so who even knows what I'm thinking.

Any suggestions for what sounds nice with Wren in that case? You can see I'm into slightly different names, nature names - someone suggested Finch in a comment and I liked that!

It's not so much that it's odd for a little child, it's more that the little child will grow into an adult!!!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/02/2025 08:41

I wouldn't.
Didn't Sparrow go on to kill Robin?
With his little bow and arrow?

LaundryPond · 10/02/2025 08:45

The idea of bird-themed names is awful. You’re having two separate human beings, you know, not naming a pair of matching flowerpots or something. If you go on having children will they be Peregrine, Phoenix etc?

Thrush ? (I’ll get me coat)

Horrible . Wren is a girls name at best and as for the others

PeskyRooks · 10/02/2025 09:09

Nicole Ritchie has a son called Sparrow.

I've always thought Starling would be a lovely name for a girl!

Whoarethoseguys · 10/02/2025 09:11

I'm sorry you can't call your child sparrow it was used to describe the singer Edith Piaf (little sparrow) because she was small but it's not a real name.I
I don't think you should use Robin either or another bird name unless it's not an obvious one and only something you and your husband would associate with a bird.
Matching and themed names just sounds too contrived.

Geneticsbunny · 10/02/2025 09:11

Linnet?

I hadn't realised!! Thanks so much for letting me know I'm not birthing a flowerpot!

Okay so prefacing this with the fact that Sparrow is one of my guilty pleasure names haha, I agree that two bird names would be too on the nose. Although weirdly, I think you could get away with Robin!

Other ideas:

Aspen
Cedar
Noa/Noam

GreeneryGrass · 10/02/2025 09:17

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, especially those that weren't a bit rude! I posted because I was up for a conversation and also a light joke (I know what mumsnet can be like!) so I did expect the comments (the thrush one was particularly great). Points taken, this baby will not be a Sparrow ✨

Thank you so much! I really love your suggestions, they're right up my street! (Also thanks for having my back on the liking of Sparrow, there's something about it, but I wouldn't dare call them that now 🤣)

Choose a more conventional name and then if you still love the idea of Sparrow once the baby is born you could refer to him/her has your little sparrow as an affectionate nickname.

Waterboatlass · 10/02/2025 09:21

Jay, Martin, Robin, I actually think Starling is quite beautiful. Petrel and Skua are kind of cool. Do you actually like particularly birds though or is it just a naming theme?

Other nice possibilities are Tit, Woodcock, Little Bustard or Shag.
