Thoughts on Flinders for a boys name?

Any thoughts on Flinders for a boys first name?

It's an old family surname I've come across but I think it would be a unique, lovely name for my son.

Please let me know if this is too 'out there'?!

😂 Is this a wind up? This is right up there with Jimberley! 😆

For real? Jimberley? Suggested in baby names?

I don't know why but this made me laugh so much. 🤣🤣
Thanks

Same. I'm actually crying with laughter.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/02/2025 21:13

Think there's a Victorian explorer called Flinders

Quick Google Matthew Fljnders was the first person to Circumnavigate Australia

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/02/2025 21:14

Wtaf no

CrushingOnRubies · 08/02/2025 21:14

That's who I'm thinking of Flinders Petrie

I quite like it

Itsniceeniugh · 08/02/2025 21:15

Definitely Flinders range in Australia

Oh god that Jimberely thread years ago was one of the funniest things ever. Right I need to find it....

Cynic17 · 08/02/2025 21:16

Reminds me of Flinders Petrie, the great archaeologist.

You'll thank me for this believe me!

Mum2jenny · 08/02/2025 21:18

Not a choice I’d make.

WhassatNow · 08/02/2025 21:18

My thoughts are, 'Is that actually a name for a person? I suppose it'd be a reasonable name for a company selling solid fuel or something like that, but less so as a given name for a child...'

I do thank you.

I’ve got a stitch from laughing.

NewYorkBuilder · 08/02/2025 21:20

Hard no. Sounds like cinders. Let’s hope there’s no ugly sisters.

The only time I have come across the word Flinders, it meant something broken into small fragments or shards. To be honest, I can’t see it as a first name.

How about Flynn, with the nickname Flinders?

It was the name of Matthew Flinders, the navigator who discovered Australia.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/02/2025 21:21

Wasn't Polly Flinders the bane of a horse in one of the Peter Whimsey short stories?

Yep! OP wanted to call the baby Jim after the grandad, but found out it's going to be a girl! 😆 So she asked if Jimberly would be OK! (I guess to rhyme with Kimberly!)

Jimberly | Mumsnet

Jimberly | Mumsnet

Originally going to be called Jim after my granddad, but we've found out we're having a girl. Would this work?

Ned Flanders

Yep 🤣

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/02/2025 21:23

As a middle name, possibly. As a first name? Hell no. We have a 'Fielding' in school and that's bad enough...

Mirabai · 08/02/2025 21:24

Flynn is fine. Flinders as a middle name ok as many people use old family surnames. But as first name it really sucks.

BleeBlahBlue · 08/02/2025 20:21

Ned Flanders

I came here to say that The Simpson’s came to my mind after reading the name

Someone’ll be along to say that Fielding McBongus was a famous Victorian acrobat or some such, so it’s all good.

MrsMontyD · 08/02/2025 21:30

He"ll be called Cinders at school

Dontbeataroundthebush1 · 08/02/2025 21:31

Absolutely awful.

butterfly0404 · 08/02/2025 21:32

Wind up surely ? Not just out there but bloody inexcusable

RitaFromTheRanch · 08/02/2025 21:33

Flinders? Flinders?

No.
