Thoughts on Flinders for a boys name?

Any thoughts on Flinders for a boys first name?

It's an old family surname I've come across but I think it would be a unique, lovely name for my son.

Please let me know if this is too 'out there'?!

GoldMoon · 08/02/2025 20:46

Jollyjoy · 08/02/2025 20:52

Is his older brother Balonz?

Porcuporpoise · 08/02/2025 20:53

"Little Polly Flinders
Sat among the cinders
Warming her pretty little toes..."

So no.

TulipCat · 08/02/2025 20:53

Finders sounds like Miss Marple's cleaning lady.

Ned Flanders

This was my first thought, then Flanders Fields, neither great! Flinders….. hmmmm. Flint, Tinder, flailing around. All things that come to mind I’m afraid.

ttcat37 · 08/02/2025 20:55

Ridiculous, sorry. Tis the hormones- don’t listen to them

Laura36TTC · 08/02/2025 20:56

I read that as Flanders.

FeralNun · 08/02/2025 20:57

It’s not great. Love Flynn though!

Also love Flanders 😁

Sorry don’t like it but Flynn or Finn are decent names.

Waterboatlass · 08/02/2025 20:59

Christ no. Sorry but some surnames just don't make good first names. Mine is definitely one of them.

Have it as a middle name?

Workhardcryharder · 08/02/2025 20:59

I genuinely thought on first look you were asking for a new dating app name

UbiquitousObjects · 08/02/2025 20:59

Good grief.

Oh op, no.

doodahdayy · 08/02/2025 20:59

Please don't

Olika · 08/02/2025 21:00

It's not working as a first name.

MioDioMio · 08/02/2025 21:00

Terrible name. No.

Flinders Petrie, famous Egyptologist.
Go with the name if you like it and sod the naysayers

His name was William so wasn’t saddled with it as a first name. Maybe OP can stick in between first and last name like Mr Petrie’s parents did.

Ned Flanders

This was my first thought too!

DiscoBeat · 08/02/2025 21:02

As you say, it's a surname. Use it as a middle name?

Ned Flanders

Little Polly Flinders
Sat among the cinders
Warming her pretty little toes!
Her mother came and caught her,
And whipped her little daughter,
For spoiling her nice new clothes.

This rhyme was my first thought on hearing it.

It would perhaps be OK as a middle name but I don't think it works as a first name.

Flinders Kleepers

I don't know why but this made me laugh so much. 🤣🤣
Thanks

I think this is a lovely reference to “In Flanders Fields” by John McRae. If you, unlike me, are not a Poetry Appreciator, then let me enlighten you: this poem is a poignant and inspiring tribute to those lives lost in WW1 (World War 1). However, one minor caveat is that one may mistake him for a soldier (or the ghost of one) himself! Many thanks, Sue
