Thoughts on Flinders for a boys name?

Any thoughts on Flinders for a boys first name?

It's an old family surname I've come across but I think it would be a unique, lovely name for my son.

Please let me know if this is too 'out there'?!

No absolutely not

TaggieO · 09/02/2025 00:07

for a human child?! please don’t, it’s dreadful! Ned Flanders is the first thing that springs to mind.

I like it.
My immediate thought was Flinders Ranges in Australia. I'd assume you were a fan of the location (which is stunning) or their namesake, the adventurous Matthew Flinders who coined the name Australia.

Isn’t it also a university in Adelaide?

Stepfordian · 09/02/2025 00:46

It certainly is yoo-neek, but mainly because no one else would saddle their kid with it.

InfiniteTeas · 09/02/2025 07:39

I don't normally comment on baby name threads, but this one popped up on active.

It's really, really bad, OP. It's got a twee, fairytale ring to it - possibly because it sounds like Cinders- and also sounds like a public school nickname from the 1920s.

I think the 's' on the end is part of the problem. Not many first names have that plural-sounding s ending - not sure how to explain it, but that's as close as I can get! The s makes it sound like a nickname or surname.

SallyWD · 09/02/2025 08:04

Please don't do it.

theduchessofspork · 09/02/2025 09:45

It’s a bit random, but I suppose he’d just get called Flin

Better as a middle name I think

Manchesterbythesea · 09/02/2025 09:47

Seriously? Give your kid a break

lurkerchan · 09/02/2025 14:37

Don't like it sorry, looks more like a word/fantasy character name. Would work fine as a middle name though

NewHeaven · 09/02/2025 15:57

If you want an unusual name then Jago fits the bill or Jonty (long version Jonathan) or Kit (long version Christopher).

Yes, loads of stuff was named after him.

Iwiicit · 09/02/2025 23:40

It sounds like an ideal name for a Dickensian chimney sweep.
I think it's lovely and you should call his siblings Pumblechook, Uriah, Wackford and Scrooge. Don't listen to the miseries on here, you go girl!

LadyRoughDiamond · 10/02/2025 00:05

It’s an Australian university, not a child’s name

user1492757084 · 10/02/2025 06:37

Flinders is a family surname and that could be meaningful.
I would use use it as a second name. It sounds best there.

Geordie Flinders Brown
Max Flinders Sullivan
Noah Flinders Middleton
Charles Flinders Saffin
Henry Flinders Federer

LovelySunnyDayToday · 10/02/2025 22:03

How about just calling him Flynn OP?

Flynn
Irish: shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Floinn 'descendant of Flann' a byname meaning 'red(dish) ruddy'. There were families of this name in various parts of Ireland. This name has also been Anglicized as Lindsay. English: from Middle English Flin representing the Old Norse male personal name Fleinn.

Giggorata · 10/02/2025 22:10

I like family surnames being incorporated into children's names. - but it does depend on the surname and my first thought was of the Little Polly Flinders rhyme.
I would go with Flyn, it isn't exclusively Irish, or else go with user1492757084's suggestions. They look better than I thought they would.

Scrimupnorth · 10/02/2025 22:11

Butter Flinders

Flynn Rider’s a good character to associate a name with. Unlike Little Polly Flinders.

Mirabai · 10/02/2025 22:54

Flynn Rider sounds like Jilly Cooper hero.

He’s the hero in Tangled.

StScholastica · 12/02/2025 21:31

Flynn is great, just stick with that.
