Thoughts on Flinders for a boys name?

Any thoughts on Flinders for a boys first name?

It's an old family surname I've come across but I think it would be a unique, lovely name for my son.

Please let me know if this is too 'out there'?!

Don't be daft.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 08/02/2025 21:35

No.

Flin or Flinn/Flynn would be ok though.

As you say, it's a surname. Use it as a middle name?

That's a good suggestion!

The Flynn thing, it's so wrong in this context. It's an irish surname, so if you are tipping your cap to acknowledge another surname you'll imply there's irish heritage and the whole point of it is lost.

CrispieCake · 08/02/2025 21:37

You go, girl.

In a world where children are being named Apple, Cricket, Rebel, Echo, Reef, Ember and Field, I fail to see why Flinders would stand out as being uniquely awful.

Have you given any consideration to Smithereen? Smithers would be a cute nickname.

Scrabbelator · 08/02/2025 21:37

My first thought when I read it was Ned Flanders from the Simpsons.

ClareK86 · 08/02/2025 21:43

I had a teacher called Mr Flinders - I don’t love it as a first name but Flynn is nice and a nod to the family name without sounding so unusual

SunLift · 08/02/2025 21:43

My mind just pictures a Victorian poverty-stricken boy. I don’t like it.

Gorgeousfeet · 08/02/2025 21:45

Nah.

Thats ridiculous

why would you saddle a kid with that made up name for the rest of their life.

🙄

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 08/02/2025 21:51

It’s terrible 😣.

Itsniceeniugh · 08/02/2025 21:53

I'm quite liking Smithers .....

It’s too out there.

Anon501178 · 08/02/2025 21:59

Makes me think of that cruel old rhyme....'little polly flinders sat amongst the cinders' sorry OP doesn't sound like a name to me....Flynn is nice though?

Yep, it's further out than Alpha Centauri!

Doitrightnow · 08/02/2025 22:03

I like it.
My immediate thought was Flinders Ranges in Australia. I'd assume you were a fan of the location (which is stunning) or their namesake, the adventurous Matthew Flinders who coined the name Australia.

chocciebiscuits · 08/02/2025 22:03

I actually love it! Blush

To be brutally honest, it sounds like a nickname the rugby lads have made up for their mate Flynn.

This. I was trying to work out what it sounds like, and it's exactly that. The kind of stupid name blokes would make up for their friend.

I'd go with Flynn

Doitrightnow · 08/02/2025 22:06

PS Just asked DH what he thought of Flinders. He said "is it a tribute to the surname? Or Australian? If so fine". So he guessed surname tribute immediately.

curious79 · 08/02/2025 22:07

It’s like a made up ghetto name. Somehow it doesn’t work.

bradypuss · 08/02/2025 22:07

Noooo
I think this is pregnancy hormones .
Flynn maybe

Tcateh · 08/02/2025 22:08

Rummly · 08/02/2025 20:27

Flinders crispy pancakes.

It’s a no from me.

Exactly what I first thought.

Sorry op, don't think this is a good name.

Thingymajigii · 08/02/2025 22:11

would you pronounce that like Flyn-ders or Fl-eye-nders?

LovelySunnyDayToday · 08/02/2025 22:29

BleeBlahBlue · 08/02/2025 20:21

Ned Flanders

This 💯

Normallynumb · 08/02/2025 23:45

No.. Keep looking at your family tree for inspiration.
