Clementine for our baby girl? Or is it just a fruit?

We both love the name Clementine but some people seem a bit perplexed when mentioned over the years that it's a name we think is lovely. "Like the fruit?"

Thoughts?

I knew that about Clement Attlee, but had never thought of the Clement/Clementine thing before!

I remember Churchill dying, and watching his funeral on tv. You can watch it here:

As well as the ceremonial, it's interesting to see London as it was then.

Richard Dimbleby sets the scene for the BBC's television coverage of the state funeral of Winston Churchill and describes the route that the procession will take.

I’m another one who likes Clementine, but not the nicknames.

Especially Clemmie - I think of that sock puppeting midwife (I obvs spend too much time on MN).

GreenwichPips · 26/01/2025 23:32

I like the name but not the nickname. My friend Clemmy was often called “Clammy” at school as a joke… 😬

46mumof6 · 26/01/2025 23:44

A beautiful name and my favourite

TheSeaOfTranquility · 26/01/2025 23:50

I like Clementine, but not Clemmy. However, it would make a beautiful middle name.

What about Clementina? Then her nn could be Tina.

MrsBungle · 26/01/2025 23:59

I think it’s a nice sound but I totally envisage the fruit.

MarCardarell · 27/01/2025 00:16

I think it sounds like a lovely middle name

QuinceTamarillo · 27/01/2025 00:54

Seems completely normal to me.

Lala87 · 27/01/2025 01:10

It's giving Amanda's tik tok dance from Motherland vibes

Lala87 · 27/01/2025 01:11

Sorry! Wrong thread 😂

BottomWibblyWob · 27/01/2025 01:11

I know 2 Clementines, I absolutely love their name and their NNs are Clem

WellsAndThistles · 27/01/2025 01:14

Awful, sorry. Maybe get a kitten one day and use it for that?

LoserWinner · 27/01/2025 01:38

My daughter was very nearly a Clementine. I changed my mind while in labour a few minutes before she was born to give her one of my names instead, but I still love the name.

Love it (obviously!) and don't mind Clemmie or Clem at all.

wandawaves · 27/01/2025 02:03

It's a fruit. And also, phlegm.
I think it's an awful name.

Thank you for the link.
I was too young to remember it at the time.
I cannot actually click on it as I don't have a TV Licence.
But I heard Nicholas Soames on Radio 5 Live describing his memories and it was very vivid and quite moving.

By the way as our vintage is showing do you think we will get pushed off here onto GN. . . .???

Levelten5 · 28/01/2025 09:38

I love it! It was a strong contender for DD

UpMyself · 28/01/2025 12:38

Too twee and fruity. Clemmie is too close to Clammy.

Aglassaday · 29/01/2025 19:29

Love it!
Have come across a small handful of Clementine’s and Clemency’s and they all lived up to the name and were incredibly sweet!

Pomegranatemum · 29/01/2025 19:37

I like it. Was on our list for DD.

TheSidewinderSleepsTonite · 29/01/2025 19:56

I think it's a lovely sounding name but it does remind me of the song (which is not a very nice story).

thehuntingofthesnarkyarse · 29/01/2025 20:09

Lovely name 🙂

Mailys · 29/01/2025 20:15

It's my favourite girls name, and it's the name of our DD7 🙂
And surprisingly no one shortens it to Clemmie or Clementine, always call her by her full name
