Clementine for our baby girl? Or is it just a fruit?

We both love the name Clementine but some people seem a bit perplexed when mentioned over the years that it's a name we think is lovely. "Like the fruit?"

Thoughts?

It is a lovely name.
I find it a sad one due to associating with a song that @Squirrelsnut also referenced
includes the lyrics “ you are lost and gone forever oh my darling Clementine”

TubeScreamer · 26/01/2025 08:17

I like it. I know two, both with one French parent, and they are always called Clem in practice.

Blue278 · 26/01/2025 08:20

No. Clem is horrid.
Constance? Similar virtue vibe and Connie is good.

Diomi · 26/01/2025 08:25

I just think of the unfortunate Clementine in the song.

mewkins · 26/01/2025 08:54

Reminds me of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The Kate Winslet character.

I like the name.

bluebunnys · 26/01/2025 09:05

The full name is ok, but very long

Clem isn't nice at all unfortunately

Newyearsurprise · 26/01/2025 09:07

I like the name Clem, works for boys too. Clem Fandango😉

CAN YOU HEAR ME CLEM FANDANGO

It’s a lovely name. I know a gorgeous Clementine.

The only thing is to decide if you want the -tyne pronunciation (more common in England) or -teen (French & how Clementine Churchill pronounced her name), and know that you will probably have to correct people a lot.

Bankin · 26/01/2025 09:11

I'll be honest I think of the fruit. I have an American friend with a daughter named Clementine and it does suit her but I wouldn't personally pick it

LlynTegid · 26/01/2025 09:14

Not one I think you should choose.

Alabas · 26/01/2025 09:15

I think of an American prairie woman, but I think that’s due to the song! I don’t dislike it, I think it’s a lot more popular in the US, but I think it’s definitely becoming more popular here.

Saltandvin · 26/01/2025 09:19

I don't think it's that unusual now and fits in with the current trend of names. I know a couple of toddlers/primary aged Clemmies. It's just a name, no one has commented that I've heard.

Raininginparadise2 · 26/01/2025 09:20

Sorry OPbut I really don't like it or any of its potential nn.

DisforDarkChocolate · 26/01/2025 09:24

I love it, it makes be feel happy.

modernshmodern · 26/01/2025 09:26

I love it

Iwishiwasapolarbear · 26/01/2025 09:27

I don’t like the nickname Clemmie, reminds me of Clammy

littlemissprosseco · 26/01/2025 09:31

I know a Clementine she’s absolutely lovely. Her shortening is Emmie!

Overthebow · 26/01/2025 09:42

I love clementine as a name but hate the nickname Clemmie as it just reminds me of phlegm.

bananafishbones1 · 26/01/2025 09:49

I love the name Clementine and Clemmie. I found when I was pregnant if you mention names to anyone you get all sorts of unreserved negative feedback but once the baby is born everybody is positive and just says how lovely.

After sharing a few ideas for names when pregnant, I decided not to share anymore. I guess the only exception is if you've chosen an very different name that means Poo or something in another language and you need the feedback 😂😂

Togetheragain45 · 26/01/2025 09:49

Clementine is a lovely name, and I really like the nickname Clemmie.

JulietSierra · 26/01/2025 09:52

I think it’s gorgeous.

user2848502016 · 26/01/2025 09:55

I like it, and I also like Clemmie

Andoutcomethewolves · 26/01/2025 10:12

I don't mind Clementine and I actually really like Clem.

Clemmy however, makes me think of phlegmy and clammy 😬 and seems kind of inevitable as a nn.

I have an extremely gorgeous, very cool friend who goes by Clemmy (it stuck at school despite parents' best efforts) and even she can't carry it off (IMO!)

crumblingschools · 26/01/2025 10:17

I always thought the pronunciation of the name was different to that of the fruit
