Iris or Alba

These are our two front runner names. Just interested in general thoughts.

Middle name will be polysyllabic, something along the lines of Evangeline (but not that).

Surname is two syllable, ending in an “ee” sound.

Love the name Alba

BoleynMemories13 · 25/01/2025 06:44

Iris is one of my favourite names. Simple, stylish.

Alba isn't for me. I just think of the cheep electrical brand from back in the day. Do they still make Alba stuff? When I was growing up, every teenager had an Alba (or Bush) CD player in their bedroom! 😂

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/01/2025 06:52

I love the name Iris 😊😊

SemperIdem · 25/01/2025 07:24

@BoleynMemories13 that is what makes me hesitate over Alba. I had a blue Alba cd player when I was young! But then, Flora seems well used enough despite that dreadful tagline lurking in the memories of those of us old enough.

Getting to the final two names and making the decision is much harder than the fun long list!

Iris

Definitely Iris. I too associate Alba with electrical goods, although I believe it's the Gaelic name for Scotland.

My friend's daughters are called Alba and Iris. I guess you have the same taste in names!

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 25/01/2025 07:33

Alba - beautiful and round in the mouth. Lovely meaning too. Alma also beautiful and beautiful meaning.

Spaceracers · 25/01/2025 07:33

Oh I remember the electronics but only now it's been mentioned!

I prefer Alba still - iris is a beautiful name but I prefer the sound of Alba and I think it's a strong sounding name. I've never met an Alba but I think she'd be really lovely and cool at the same time!

IJustLoveDogsTBH · 25/01/2025 07:34

Iris, beautiful.

Alba is lovely but you wouldn’t believe how many girls I know whose names being with A, end with A, or both.

It’s all- Avani, Anaya, Avnaya, Isla, Arya, Amelia, etc.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 25/01/2025 07:34

I know an Alba. Spanish mum

usernother · 25/01/2025 07:35

Iris is a beautiful name. Alba isn't.

RabbitsRock · 25/01/2025 07:38

I love Iris

Reetpetitenot · 25/01/2025 07:52

Both nice but prefer Iris. Have tried saying it with a few 3 syllable middle names and it flows better than Alba.

pwaow · 25/01/2025 07:59

Alba just makes me think of the electrical brand too.
Iris is lovely.

DustyLee123 · 25/01/2025 08:01

Alba seems so bland to me, much prefer Iris.

Talipesmum · 25/01/2025 08:02

Lovely names especially Iris. But you saying the two together like that made me think of Idris Elba :-)

h7htj392 · 25/01/2025 08:11

Alba makes me think of the political party (and to a lesser extent, the electrical brand).

NatalieNatalieNatalie · 25/01/2025 08:13

Both absolutely gorgeous! To balance out some of the other associations, Alba means dawn in Italian.
Maybe you will just know which one to use when your little one arrives.

Iris

KookyDenimBalonz · 25/01/2025 08:18

Is Alba pronounced as it is written? There is an Irish name Ailbhe pronounced Alva. There is also a Spanish name Alva. It might be a nice alternative to Alba?
Iris is a bit wishy washy for me, not a strong name in my opinion. I What about Enid?

NormaleKartoffeln · 25/01/2025 08:18

As a Scottish person Alba just wouldn't be a choice for me tbh, too many associations with other things (political party, TV station, lots of hotel and B and B names). Iris is better, though I did hear a Glaswegian woman murder it with her accent every time she said it.

There's also the Scottish version, pronounced differently again.
