A name for Diego’s sister

DS is called Diego. DH is from a Spanish speaking country and as we live in the UK it was important for us to have a name that was obviously Spanish but still worked well in the UK. We’re expecting a little girl now and are really stumped on names. We’d like something that meets the same criteria we had for DS’s name. Ideally names that are pronounced the same in English and Spanish. Any ideas?

A lot of the names being suggested are not Spanish. Lots of Italian names, lots of names with markedly different pronunciations between Spanish and English. Some of the Spanish names are really old fashioned or have religious connotations the OP may or may not want. I've not noticed the old lady name trend in Spain in the way it's taken hold in the UK in the last twenty years.

I think lots of people get Spanish/Italian names confused, I’ve noticed it a lot when we were asking for names for DS!.

Thank you for all the replies!. Our list is now Nerea
Maria
Mireia
Ariadna
Rosalia
Ainara
Liliana
Some of these might be a bit difficult to pronounce in English but there’s not obvious pronunciation differences between English and Spanish if that makes sense.

Liliana is lovely (I meant to suggest it before!). I know someone in the UK who chose it for her DD and I don't they come across any issues with it, spelling or pronunciation.
Goes really well with Diego too.
Just my two pennies'worth.
Be interested to know what you go for in the end!

I am definitely in the Paloma camp! Lovely.

Richtea67 · 17/01/2025 13:38

How about Lara, or Alba?

Barleysugar86 · 17/01/2025 13:39

Laurel. It's the name of the how to get away with murder spanish character and I thought it sounded really cool on her.

CrochetYayBeanHead · 17/01/2025 13:42

Alba?

keepgoingbackagain · 17/01/2025 17:30

I like Alba, but I prefer longer names I think

Think Dove rather than Pigeon. That's the reason Paloma is a fairly commonly used name in the Spanish-speaking world.

Thank you for the suggestions! We’ve pretty much decided on Mireia, nothings set in stone until she’s here but that’s our favourite!. Now we need to find a middle name!.
