A name for Diego’s sister

DS is called Diego. DH is from a Spanish speaking country and as we live in the UK it was important for us to have a name that was obviously Spanish but still worked well in the UK. We’re expecting a little girl now and are really stumped on names. We’d like something that meets the same criteria we had for DS’s name. Ideally names that are pronounced the same in English and Spanish. Any ideas?

Very unusual but son's friend in nursery is called Balia - very pretty

You can download the data on popular baby name in Spain here (I realise your husband is from a Spanish-speaking country, not necessarily Spain). Looking at the list for names which are both recognisably Spanish, and would work in the UK, I wondered about Manuela and Carlot(t)a.

Thank you for this, we like

Hmm, not pretty if you work in a medical field and know what balanitis is 😬

As an aside, Carlotta definitely sounds like a vampire.

Wow so many responses, thank you!.
I like Julietta, Maria, and Louisa but prefer Luisa spelling.

Another approach- could you get up the full names of DH’s grandmothers and great-grandmothers (including middle names) and see if you get any ideas from those.

If you pick Luisa but your DD is living in an English speaking country it will be mispelled as Louisa all the time.

Eva is a problem pronounced Ava in Spanish but Eva in English.

I think you need to try for a name which avoids these two problems - I'm on team Rosa, easy to spell in both languages and the pronunciation is similar.

User543211 · 16/01/2025 20:35

Constancia, Connie for short

CowBuoy · 16/01/2025 20:37

Maradona, especially if you're in Scotland

AuraBora · 16/01/2025 20:46

I agree with @Hungryheart2025 - you need to also take into account whether misspelling in English would be bothersome - best example being Luisa, I think (as most Brits would just assume Louisa) - and also whether different pronunciation in English/Spanish is an issue for you.

There are some great names suggested which would avoid both of those issues.
Personally I really like Catalina (some in UK may ask for spelling but I don't think there would be an automatic assumption it wa spelt differently as in the case of Luisa). It's a bit different but pretty, goes well with Diego and could be 'Cat' for short if your DD/you like that.
I love the name Paloma, and Elena is nice too.
