Naming a baby after an “Anne” but with a variation of Anne

we have a long long line of Annes in our family which it would be nice to keep going but with a bit of an update. Trying to think of names derived from Anne that aren’t quite as dated as Anne. So far I have the following which I would welcome views on but also I would welcome other ideas.

Annie
Anna (already used in the most recent generation as an update so can’t immediately be used again)
Anya
Annabelle
Nina (Russian diminutive of Anne - love this but is it too removed from Anne?)

Ariadne?

Rowanne?

RuthW · 09/01/2025 18:16

Anne is much nicer than all your suggestions

EvelynBeatrice · 09/01/2025 18:17

Annis ( see Georgette Heyer ‘A Lady of Quality’).

I loved Nina and almost used it for DD but my DH wasn't keen. Her middle name is Rosanna though - would that work?

Gingermidget · 09/01/2025 18:25

Angharad? I know someone who used it to carry on a family tradition of Anne’s

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/01/2025 18:25

Annia is an Ancient Roman name that’s rarely used now but could be an option? Otherwise personally I think most names are too far from Anne/Anna to be obvious honour names - apart from maybe “smoosh ones” like Annemarie or Annabel or Annella. Which is a shame because I really love Antonia, nn Annie.

Thanks all.

Anne is still on the table. I think when you get she’d be called Annie as a nn anyway. Annie itself is also still a possibility but it feels odd to put as a formal name on the birth cert.

I like Nancy suggested here but like Nina I love it but worry it’s not obviously enough in honouring the name Anne.

Anouk is a new idea that I like too.

Agnes?
Technically Anne and Agnes are not the same name but in some places they are used interchangeably.

Annne?

Don't do that no matter what you do

Headingtowardsdivorce · 10/01/2025 05:58

I had no idea that Nina and Nancy were from Anne.

There are 2 Annie’s in my child’s nursery

LittleBigHead · 10/01/2025 06:50

Nancy

But Anne is hardly a dated name - it’s a classic. Simple and unpretentious.

Nancy is a centuries old shortening of or familiar name for Anne. Like Kitty as a shortening for Katherine or Sally as a shortening for Sarah. People are a bit ignorant about this, obviously, and use them as separate names - I once knew sisters called Sally and Sarah - hilarious!

But in this case I don’t think you can have your cake and eat it. If you want continue a family tradition and “honour” Anne, call your daughter Anne - not something that isn’t Anne! It’s pretty simple really.

Anaya
Antoinette
Louanne
Anina
Penina

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/01/2025 07:22

Diana.

deeahgwitch · 10/01/2025 07:39

Sally Ann / Sally Anne is a lovely name too.

It's a completely unrelated name and only shares the initial letter. Ng is a separate letter in Welsh. They might as well have used Amanda, Avril or Abigail.

strangeandfamiliar · 10/01/2025 15:36

Was coming on to say Anouk, but see it's already been suggested! Also love Nancy and Anya.

applebee33 · 10/01/2025 15:37

Anais is a lovely name . Pronunciation is Anne -ehz

Hear, hear.

Suggestions like Diana are bizarre.

Wasn't Nina just a name meaning girl, and Nino a boy, and they were usually short for something ending in -ina or -ino?

If you are honouring Anne, use Anne not some nod to it.
Annie and Nancy are both currently popular without being overused.

Every Sally I know is a Sally Anne.
