Naming a baby after an “Anne” but with a variation of Anne

we have a long long line of Annes in our family which it would be nice to keep going but with a bit of an update. Trying to think of names derived from Anne that aren’t quite as dated as Anne. So far I have the following which I would welcome views on but also I would welcome other ideas.

Annie
Anna (already used in the most recent generation as an update so can’t immediately be used again)
Anya
Annabelle
Nina (Russian diminutive of Anne - love this but is it too removed from Anne?)

My Anne is called Nancy.

the name started out as a diminutive of Anne and only started being used as a name in its own right relatively recently.

BootballJoy · 09/01/2025 12:30

I'd go for Anna or Nancy.

Anne is actually pretty nice as it is. Annabel/Annabelle is probably the most popular in nurseries etc at the moment.

LegoLandslide · 09/01/2025 12:32

I love Anne, it's beautiful and classic

I also really like Anastasia although as I understand it they are totally different names.

I work with an Ané (pronounced ann-ay) which I think is lovely.
Anya is also a beautiful name

peachgreen · 09/01/2025 12:38

Nina and Nancy are both lovely.

fhawdugmtsajud · 09/01/2025 12:52

I would just stick with Anne. It's a lovely name and I don't think it sounds dated.
I find things like Ivy, Ethel and so on sound really old but they seem to be quite popular these days.

If you really don't want to call her Anne, I like Annelie, Annina, Annemarie, Annalena and Annie (though lots of children are called Annie these days)

I think Anne is cool, classic and due a come back.

Agree.
I don’t know any little Annes , for a classic name it is underused and stands out. I really like it.

Eviebeans · 09/01/2025 12:56

Anise

JaninaDuszejko · 09/01/2025 13:00

My great aunt was Annie. Except she hated the name and changed it to Anna. DD has a friend who hates her frilly name (suggested multiple times above) and calls herself Anne.

Anne is beautiful, as is Anna. Use Anne.

Do you have any Welsh connections? I live in England but know a little girl called 'Anwen' or 'Anni' for short and taught a much older one who went by the full name. It means beautiful and I think it really is!

Sandwichgen · 09/01/2025 13:11

Annick ?

Sandwichgen · 09/01/2025 13:13

Annice ?

(Both culled from Brother Cadfael 😀)

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 09/01/2025 13:18

I love Anne (that spelling in particular) and would love to see it revived. Of the other possibilities, I really like Anneli, Annabel and Annika, and kind of like Anouk, although I've never met a non-French person with that name.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 09/01/2025 13:31

Polish version is Aniela - said like 'Daniela' without the D

whengodwasarabbit1 · 09/01/2025 13:32

What's the little girl in Chocolat called? I think Anouk?

Clarinet1 · 09/01/2025 13:49

Well I had an Anne, an Angela and a Christina who were important in my life so I always thought I might combine the three and go for Angelina.

Sotired22 · 09/01/2025 13:50

I love Anya, I knew a girl called that as a kid and have always thought it was really cool and different. Anna is nice too. Anais?

Coffeetostart · 09/01/2025 13:51

Hanne

AnneShirleysNewDress · 09/01/2025 13:54

Anne is lovely, she might like Annie as a nickname. From your list I love Nina. If you want to go with an update, I'd go with that.

ChristmasKelpie · 09/01/2025 13:57

Anneli

Fifthtimelucky · 09/01/2025 17:38

I love the name Anne, but I agree it sounds a bit dated.

I'd either use it as a middle name or go for a name that includes the sound, like Antonia, Marianne, or Susanna(h).

ManchesterLu · 09/01/2025 17:43

Annabelle but you could call her Belle.

MyDeepZebra · 09/01/2025 17:44

I know an Anneline through work (ANNA-Leen) and think it's a lovely name.

Also like Anabel, Antonia and Antonella
