Naming a baby after an “Anne” but with a variation of Anne

we have a long long line of Annes in our family which it would be nice to keep going but with a bit of an update. Trying to think of names derived from Anne that aren’t quite as dated as Anne. So far I have the following which I would welcome views on but also I would welcome other ideas.

Annie
Anna (already used in the most recent generation as an update so can’t immediately be used again)
Anya
Annabelle
Nina (Russian diminutive of Anne - love this but is it too removed from Anne?)

Annaliese?

Annette

Anita
Annette
Annika

But I don't think Ann/Anne is dated; it's classic and understated.

Hannah could work. It came before Anne so not derived from it as such but still seems less old fashioned to me.

I like Annika, a Swedish diminutive of Anne, now used as a stand-alone. And Anneli, a short form of Anne used in Swedish, Finnish, Estonian, and German.

I love Nina! I think it's historically used as a diminutive of many different names that include an N sound and get the trad feminine diminutive -ina added. So why not from Anne/Anna, if it feels close to Anne for you? There's also a Danish model-turned-fashion designer Anine Bing (born 1982) who's much in the news these days; Ane is the Danish version of Anne and so Anine could be another modern spin on Anna/Anne.

I like Anya too, and would also consider the Scandi/Finnish Anja and the Polish version Ania as options.

Anouk (Dutch) could be another possibility.

I met an Annina once. I think her mum was Finnish.

Oh Nina is just lovely.
But if you were sticking to a really Anne style name then I think Annie. It’s very cool.

I think Anne is cool, classic and due a come back.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 09/01/2025 06:29

I knew an Anne at university who went by Nina.

Annika is nice. Or Anneke (both 'e's are sounded, so it doesn't sound terribly different from Annika), which is I think North German. Both basically diminutives of Anne - the 'ka' or 'ke' ending means 'little'. The same goes for Anneli (which I personally think of as Swiss German rather than German per se).

If you wanted something longer, maybe a combo of Anne with another element - Anneliese, or Annalena.

SemmaLina · 09/01/2025 06:32

mellongoose · 09/01/2025 06:52

Roseanna
Aine (pronounced Anya)

Ohwtfnow · 09/01/2025 06:56

I’d just stick with Anne - it’s classic and has been very unusual for children for the past 30 years at least. It’s an understated, beautiful name. There are so many little Annies and Annas around but no Annes.

MayaPinion · 09/01/2025 06:56

Anna is a perfect, classic, name.

arrigatto · 09/01/2025 07:00

Anne is quite refreshing. Makes me think Anne of Green gables

But otherwise Anya & Nina are the best options. I really hate Annabelle, it's so saccharine
