DH’s family are Welsh, mine are Scottish (although I was brought up in SE England). Our son is Elis (Welsh) and so I’m looking at Scottish names for baby boy number 2. Please share with me your favourites ☺️

@HesterMalingerer thanks so much ☺️ I am aiming for a Scottish or Welsh name as that’s connected to our families heritage. Is ‘Finlay’ still pronounced the same as ‘Finley’? X

Ooh I love Torin. My childhood highland pony's sire was Torrin.

HesterMalingerer · 04/11/2024 11:37

@DaisyEM I would say Finlay "fin-lee" more or less, though not a strong "ee" sound. Hard to write!

Is Henry Scottish? I've never even met a Henry, quite a few Hughs tho in Scotland!

What does everyone think of the name/spelling Ruairi? I know traditionally it’s ‘Ruairidh’, but my name ends in dh and I’d prefer to not match names, as obviously a ‘dh’ on the end is quite unusual and people will probably notice both my name and DS2’s name ends with it!

I'm Scottish and I would probably think that spelling is someone trying to honour their Celtic routes but made a big booboo. Sorry.

(Being presumptous here) Would be a bit like spelling your name as Eili

Aye, Henry will be absolutely fine in Scotland as would any other name! We're quite diverse.

Tumbler2121 · 11/07/2026 15:07

14 spellings of Finley etc. I'd give it a miss.

Aye, and loads of spellings on Rory that's why I just stuck on the simpler Rory, couldn't be arsed with spelling out the gaelic one!
