I really love it.
Is it the pregnancy hormones? Or is it as great as I think it is?

No.

Copperoliverbear · 04/10/2024 22:10

Why an earth would you want to subject your child to this all of their lives, please don't.

MakeMeATea · 04/10/2024 22:10

Hmm let's see

Fucky ducky
What's up duck
Dicky
Duckhead

Yeah your child will resent you forever.

It's terrible and I would be very surprised if a Registrar would agree to register that as a name.

Frith2013 · 04/10/2024 22:16

Don't be ridiculous.

HappyMe6 · 04/10/2024 22:21

You are naming a person, not a pet, not an eternal baby, but a person who will one day be an adult, and maybe have a responsible job, and will not want a name that makes them sound like an idiot.

HollyKnight · 04/10/2024 22:24

No. The child will spend their life rolling their eyes at "Get Ducky in a row" puns.

Forevertiredmam · 04/10/2024 22:25

Birdie would probably be much better. Duckie just sounds like a pet name, excuse the pun haha

theexceliconisgreen · 04/10/2024 22:26

The only Duckie I know..

Can I call my child Duckie?
YellowAsteroid · 04/10/2024 22:27

Just make sure you open a savings account to pay for your child’s therapy.

Just no.

pinkstripeycat · 04/10/2024 22:37

In my county duckie is what old people call kids. Slang for dear. My dad used to call me it. Or “Me old duck”, “ducks” or “duckie.”

Dont do it op

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Coffee GIF by Pop TV

Why are you so mad at your baby?

I'm kidding. I kinda like Duckie, and Spike is kinda awesome too. I named my kid after a Buffy The Vampire Slayer character.

Clawdy · 04/10/2024 22:47

Years ago, I remember kids saying "Ooh, duckie!" and doing a camp little flounce like Sean in Corrie.

godmum56 · 04/10/2024 22:50

Its hormones. Either that or you are batshit.
Next question.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 04/10/2024 22:52

I freely admit that I am still aged 3 at heart, and love calling things like my children's toys "birdy", "liony", "snakey" etc.

It sounds very cute, possibly quite childish, and probably a bit silly. Obviously if I was actually aged 3, this would be fine. But being 40 years older, I do feel.somewhat not really convinced it's something entirely appropriate for a middle-aged woman to do. I think it's ok in the context of age-appropriate conversation with my children, but not really anything other than this.

My point of this rambling reply is to say that Ducky is cute in terms of a small child's name for its own cuddly toys, but it is probably pretty much just embarrassing for a name to call a baby who will live its life with your choice.

Unless of course, you love the regional slang stereotypical phrase "Aye up, me duck!", in which case, it's possibly the best name ever.

Snugglemonkey · 04/10/2024 22:55

Birdie was a serious contender for me for a while. It is common where I am from to call little girls in particular wee birdie or wee bird. I thankfully gave my child an actual name. Still call her wee bird or birdie though and she responds.

@Pickledpicklez
Spike is genuinely on my list. A close second to Duckie - I'd forgotten he was also a land before time dude. I wonder how spike would go down on Mumsnet I feel I should put it out there and find out....

Please, for the love of all things duck-like, don't call your child Spike. It's not great.

RoadToRhodes · 04/10/2024 22:58

Chucky?

I join my toddler in calling her cuddly monkey "oo oo", her dog "ooff ooff" and her lion "warrr", it is adorable. However, I am totally with you that these things are only cute in context. Outwith that, it is just embarrassing for them.

Pickledpicklez · 04/10/2024 23:04

Go Ruby or Cera

(land before time references)

whydoihavetowork · 04/10/2024 23:14

Duckie Boos... Count Duckula anyone?

StMarieforme · 04/10/2024 23:17

TeenToTwenties · 04/10/2024 18:45

Find a breed of duck that sounds like a name. Call child that, then use Duckie as a nickname.
(Or NCIS style change your surname to Mallard)

Or Mallard as the name maybe?
