Love this name for a boy.

Are we going to get lots of "Azza" and "Ass-a" pronouncing?

Worked with an ASA, nickname 'Spade'

Beamur · 23/09/2024 16:04

The real life Asa I know (in Yorkshire) is pronounced Ay-sah or Acer if you say it in a similar way to Ace-sah not Ace-sur

Beth216 · 23/09/2024 16:43

I'd pronounce it As-ah. I didn't know it was pronounced Acer.

I would hate to have something so close to Ass as my name personally.

Boomer55 · 23/09/2024 16:51

Ay (as in the letter A) and then sa.

KayEmAy · 23/09/2024 17:14

ace-uh

FloofPaws · 23/09/2024 17:17

Ace-a

Arcticlife · 23/09/2024 17:44

Super common girls name in Norway, spelt Åsa (pronounced Aw-sah).

Aligirlbear · 23/09/2024 17:45

Might get a few jokes when older as ASA is the Advertising Standards Authority

KirstenBlest · 23/09/2024 18:30

Ay-suh

sel2223 · 24/09/2024 14:36

Kids at school still say Ass-ah no matter how it's meant to be pronounced

Then teachers and other caregivers should tell pupils how to correctly pronounce it.

@JellyBeanFactory the Asa I knew was a gardener so worked with spades. Unsure if he was called “Ace of Spades”.

Absolutely, in an ideal world. If only it was that simple and bullying could be stamped out forever

I know it's pronounced Ay-sa and love the sound of the name but whenever I see it written down my mind defaults to ahhh-za which I know is just wrong. Prefer the Acer spelling so my basic brain can compute it properly 😅 but I think that's probably used more for trees and laptops. So even though it's a lovely sounding name it's off the table for us, which is sad.

Ay-sa. It can’t be Ass-a, because that isn’t logical in English pronunciation rules.

How do you pronounce NASA?

KirstenBlest · 25/09/2024 16:07

@ThatFlightyTemptress , how do you say radar, Quasar, Jason, Mason, Anastasia, etc?

Or do you say Ava as Avva?

peaceinourtime · 25/09/2024 16:28

Asa is pronounced ace-a as cited on here. It is a fab name

s3tut0y3r · 26/09/2024 00:38

Yes. It is not immediately clear how to say this name. The teacher will get it wrong in front of the class.

Why not spell it Acer? (Like the tree) It could be shortened to Ace.

mathanxiety · 26/09/2024 01:34

Ay-sa.

There would need to be two Ss to end up with Ass-a.

If you love the name, use it.

It is absolutely crystal clear to anyone with a knowledge of phonics, or anyone with even a slight familiarity with the Old Testament.

If a teacher got it wrong, in front of a class or elsewhere, I would question their level of education and how they ended up teaching in an English-speaking country.

SileSeilide · 23/09/2024 14:50

Not as singular as applying English language spelling and pronunciation rules to a name from another language...

It has been anglicized, so it is an English name, and the rules of phonics apply.

mathanxiety · 26/09/2024 01:40

Do people pronounce Ava "Avva"?

Has it occurred to you that there are places in the UK and elsewhere where that R would be voiced?

mathanxiety · 26/09/2024 01:42

Needanewname42 · 23/09/2024 15:27

Never seen it before I'd assume Ass-a.
But I can see where the Ay-sa would come from two vowels together - the first says it's name. But I can't think of any words with a_a

Ava

mathanxiety · 26/09/2024 01:43

Also - Ada.

sel2223 · 26/09/2024 04:29

The colourful English language isn't as straight forward as some posters here seem to believe.

Yes, it could be pronounced like Ava, but it could also be pronounced like NASA.

OP asked for opinions and should be prepared for the potential for pronunciation issues.
