Love this name for a boy.

Are we going to get lots of "Azza" and "Ass-a" pronouncing?

My aunt is Swedish and is called Ã…sa. It's pronounced O-sa. Lovely name.

That’s a different name, though.

Sashya · 22/09/2024 23:15

Never heard of the name. Looks like a girl's name to me,
For a boy - I can only imagine the sort of teasing the poor kid will endure with a name spelling close to a piece of anatomy little boys would find so funny.
If you want him to be called Acer - better spell it that way

Asa Briggs historian and code breaker at Bletchley.
Ay-cer

HotCrossBunplease · 22/09/2024 23:19

I’d read it as Azza.

Underlig · 22/09/2024 23:21

I’m quite shocked at the number of posters saying they haven’t heard or seen the name before. It’s a male biblical name. And Asa Briggs is famous.

Ay-sa. I was at school with a boy called Asa. His nickname was Asa Spades

I was at work with an Asa who had the same nickname until Ace of Bass became a thing, then it was Ace of Bass

Also had a great uncle Asa, who was lovely (and from Yorkshire).

Asa also autocorrects to ASA which is a nuisance.

I haven’t heard the name before (despite teaching for many years) and I would have pronounced it Ass-er too. Not religious and haven’t heard of Asa Briggs.

AmeliaEarache · 22/09/2024 23:31

Asa Butterfield has been in quite a lot of films, I’d have thought most people would have heard of him (he’s particularly good in Hugo)

Ay-sa. Nice name.

Happygib · 23/09/2024 00:11

My Asa (Ay-sa) is ten and hes never been teased for his name/had it mispronounced.
Nickname-Ace, which of course he is.

I have seen his name written down loads but never heard anyone say it!

Never heard of Asa Briggs.

HotCrossBunplease · 23/09/2024 00:17

Hold on- is it Ay-sa or Ace-a (Acer if you’re non-rhotic)?

Those two pronunciations are different.

Marcipex · 23/09/2024 00:27

Acer
I would spell it that way too. I think Asa has too much teasing potential.

TeaOrCoffeeOrHotChocolate · 23/09/2024 00:39

Like the tree.

It's a great name.

Though hopefully won't get the nn Ace as I hate that!

Anisty · 23/09/2024 00:54

Never seen the name before, but read it as Ay cer straight away.

herecomesautumn · 23/09/2024 01:01

Ay sah. Like Asa Hartfield the ex footballer

SwedishEdith · 23/09/2024 01:03

Asa Hartford is my reference for the name as well. I think it's a great name. Not sure how anyone could get Ass a from the spelling when only one s. And, no, don't change the spelling to Acer - that's a different name.

canwestopwiththenameshaming · 23/09/2024 01:06

There's absolutely not an R anywhere in it so no it's not Acer ffs 😂
It's Ace-ah. Different maybe if you have the accent that can't end a word in an "ah" sound without chucking an r sound on it, but no the same is still Ace-ah regardless, not Acer. I do know a boy with the name Asa, nice name.

Chasqui · 23/09/2024 01:08

Acer, like Asa Briggs.

LadyGAgain · 23/09/2024 01:16

I worked with a wonderful lady and her name is Asa. OrrrrSa

DiscoBeat · 23/09/2024 01:18

I've not heard the name but would assume Ayza pronunciation.

HoHoHoliday · 23/09/2024 01:35

I only know it as Ã…sa, pronounced Or-sa or Oh-sa.
I think general pronunciation in the UK is Ay-za.

Sorry, I'm not in the UK and have never heard of him.
I'd have guessed Ay-sa OP.

thecatneuterer · 23/09/2024 01:51

Well I read it in my head as Advertising Standards Authority, but that was probably because you'd put it in capitals. If I had to try to pronounce it I'd say Aysa I think.

deliwoman1 · 23/09/2024 06:20

I’m confused by the Ay-sa pronunciation, and this name is on my list too! I read that as Eye-sa. It’s the Y that transforms it for me.

I say Asa as ‘A-sah,’ closer to Acer but without that R. In my mild West Country accent, Acer comes out Ace-er.

I genuinely feel that anyone who sees Ass-a doesn’t have a great command of how English pronunciation works. You can’t make the ass sound out of one S. I can understand that some might think As-a, but that’s not the end of the world.

It’s such an easy one to pronounce once you do hear it that you should only have to correct people once anyway.

HedgePigWig · 23/09/2024 06:26

This thread has been an eye opener for me.

  1. I'd have assumed it was the scandi version which is pronounced kind of Oh-sa but not quite - the A is like the first A in Anna from Frozen. Not really a sound we have in English so I can't quite describe it.
  1. This explains my very Yorkshire ex-MIL trying to insist I called my first baby Acer. I thought she meant Acer but it's just dawned on me that she meant Asa if it's common in Yorkshire.
