You may not be a fan of the Brontë sisters but if you use that name that will be the association they are stuck with for life

I love it! I think you should spend your maternity leave reading some classics then 😉 currently sat here reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall! Being a fan of the authors doesn’t put me off it being a first name at all. I see it as a cool association.

Also, don’t worry too much about what people think! Everyone, and I mean everyone, will have an opinion on the names you like, even the most seemingly inoffensive plain names will get negative feedback from someone! It’s just the warmup to parenthood and people forever telling you how to raise your kid 🤣

Tenant of Wildfell Hall is my favourite,

Wuthering heights is just wierdly creepy to my mind.

Still like Bronte as a name though.

CurlewKate · 30/08/2024 21:28

Charlotte, Anne and Emily are good names...

SwayingInTime · 30/08/2024 21:29

I know a woman and a girl with this name and really like it

RedRobyn2021 · 30/08/2024 21:31

@MrsTerryPratchett

Well I guess no one is ever going to be able to find my first daughter in the system!

Oh dear

Oh well

I LOVE Brontë. It’s more common in Australia. Please don’t listen to peoples opinions when it comes to choosing a name, it’s so personal. The people saying no way probably have kids names I wouldn’t choose in a million years. Go for it if you both love it, I think it’s lovely and it’s on my list for a girl too!

Highandloww · 30/08/2024 21:31

I know a Bronte. One of the loveliest and happiest kids I've met.

I used to think it was ok. Then I watched MAFS Australia a few years ago and there was an awful woman on it called Brontë and it really put me off the name.

Yes there are names I feel like that about too

I used to know an unpleasant girl called Faye

Faye is actually a lovely name but I can't hear it without thinking of her

Oh man I LOVE Wuthering Heights. Like deep in my bones love. But it is divisive.

I love The Tenant of Wildfell too, I am walking round the house calling DH a ‘confounded slut,’ under my breath 😂

I knew a Bronte she would be about 30 now
What about Broghan

ResultsMayVary · 30/08/2024 21:35

The movie Green Card made Bronte more popular as a girls name. I think many younger people wouldn't associate the name with the Bronte sisters.

It seems a common name for Australian Olympic swimmers.

I think it's a beautiful name. Whatever name you choose some will hate it and others love it.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 30/08/2024 21:35

It’s a given name but not with that spelling, but you can do what you like, basically. It sounds nice. But why do people keep mentioning Umlaut? It’s not an umlaut, it’s a diaeresis but not an umlaut.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/08/2024 21:35

Pretty and a lovely tribute to the Authors (people will assume that her parents are fans so you’ll have to put up with people asking about that 🤣 , a bit like for boys named Byron). On the negative side, there are two pronunciations (similar to Esme - I must admit I prefer the Bron-tay and Ez-may pronunciations), people won’t use the accent, might get called Brontosaurus by kids going through a dinosaur phase - but none of those are a huge deal imo. It’s a perfectly useable name - a bit more modern sounding than similar Bronwen.

Pippifer · 30/08/2024 21:36

I like it!

I have also read zero books by any of them.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 30/08/2024 21:36

I absolutely love it…..

Bigearringsbigsmile · 30/08/2024 21:37

I really like it.
Didn't andy mcdowell play a bronte in Green Card?

pambeesleyhalpert · 30/08/2024 21:38

I love it

I actually really like it. I used to dislike surnames as Christian names/first names, but it's all growing on me now. Taylor, Reilly, Jackson etc. And I knew a Bronte who worked with my DH. She was working part time to fund her medical degree. She's doing pretty well in life now.

SnoopySnoopDoggIsTheBest · 30/08/2024 21:39

I love it and I have a friend called Bronte too and it suits her so well .. go for it OP!

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 30/08/2024 21:39

I love it because it reminds me of the film Green Card.
The main female lead in that, Andie MacDowell, had it.

The only other name that's remotely similar is Briony.
That's also nice but Bronte is prettier.

modgepodge · 30/08/2024 21:39

I quite like it too, but my mums friend had a daughter called this so I’ve been aware of it as a name for over 30 years. I’ve never met another one in the UK. People will be much more familiar with it as a surname and lots of people (ironically, me included!) dislike surnames used as first names.

I do think people will assume you’re a fan of the authors. That said, with what I know of my mums friend I think it highly unlikely sbe was!!

Yokaiwatch · 30/08/2024 21:41

It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks because no matter what name you pick someone will hate it!

I would assume that you are a fan of the Brontë sisters but it’s not a terrible thing for people to think….

I am not keen on the name tbh but I am a fan of the Charlotte, Emily and Anne names so it’s unlikely to be a name I would like.

Why don’t you wait until you meet her and if Brontë fits, that’s her name x

Milsonophonia · 30/08/2024 21:41

Bronte-saurus

And apart from that very Australian, if that bothers you
