I’m sorry, I don’t like it either. I think this is why people should not ask others’ opinions about names though - if you love it that’s what matters, but you asked so I’m answering.

A young girl at my daughter nursery has this name. It suits her

RedRobyn2021 · 30/08/2024 21:15

I'm not particularly a fan of the Bronte sisters, I have read none of their books. So I appreciate that the name is associated with them, but it is actually a first name regardless of them.

So to be clear, I am not some super fan of their books, I just really like the name.

Everyone that knows someone called Bronte seems to like it, everyone saying it's the worst name ever keeps banging on about the authors

People say you shouldn't care what others think, but to a degree I do care. I want my daughter to have a nice name and literally the only thing putting me off is that other people don't like it.

That’s what matters isn’t it, not a bunch of randoms on the internet.

TheLurpackYears · 30/08/2024 21:18

I surprised myself that I like it. Not if you surname is Parsonage though.

Oh weird coincidence! I literally just (as in 10 minutes ago) met my very first Bronte. She was nurse taking me for an x-ray at hospital and was very kind and beautiful and the name suited her perfectly, I even mentioned to her what a lovely name it was! I like it 🙂

That is a funny coincidence

Is it Bront-ee or Bront-ay?

If you haven't read a single book you really shouldn't.

And you haven't bothered with the umlaut in your post. No one else will. Special characters are a pain for admin. And without it, the name would be Bronte not Brontë. And would not be pronounced the same.

The former

This!

If I had asked for opinions on my daughter's name I'm pretty sure I'd have been put off it by MN...but all I get is compliments in 'real life'!

RaininSummer · 30/08/2024 21:19

Brontë..saurus?

MatLeave · 30/08/2024 21:20

It's a beautiful name.

Topseyt123 · 30/08/2024 21:20

I'm in the UK too. I used to know a Brontë. She was nice.

It's not a name I would use, but it's OK. I've certainly heard worse.

RedRobyn2021 · 30/08/2024 21:21

@MrsTerryPratchett

My first daughter has an accent on her name, I'm aware nobody will bother putting it on and figured that when I was pregnant with my first too

OP posts:
ThewaytoAmarula · 30/08/2024 21:22

I think it sounds a bit harsh and odd, but I think it's because it reminds me a bit of bronchitis.

Also it's not an umlaut.

IveGotALovelyBunchOfCoconutss · 30/08/2024 21:24

I think it's a lovely name. If you are worried about it though could it be a middle name? I say go with what you love to be honest

It's not just that. You can't find people in the system, you end up having to try it different ways, it's just a pain. And without it, it isn't the same name.

DrinkElephants · 30/08/2024 21:24

I used to think it was ok. Then I watched MAFS Australia a few years ago and there was an awful woman on it called Brontë and it really put me off the name.

hazandduck · 30/08/2024 21:24

I love it! I think you should spend your maternity leave reading some classics then 😉 currently sat here reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall! Being a fan of the authors doesn’t put me off it being a first name at all. I see it as a cool association.

Also, don’t worry too much about what people think! Everyone, and I mean everyone, will have an opinion on the names you like, even the most seemingly inoffensive plain names will get negative feedback from someone! It’s just the warmup to parenthood and people forever telling you how to raise your kid 🤣

Beginningless · 30/08/2024 21:25

I think the trick is not to ask what people think, then baby comes and the people around you love her and they forget how they felt about the name. People aren’t usually rude enough to say they don’t like a name once baby is here. And I promise you, you will not find a single name that no one dislikes.

But I can help but ask where the pronunciation Bront-ee is coming in? Any Brontes I’ve heard it’s all Bront-ay like the author. So that’s something to consider - I assume you’d be correcting pronunciation all the time if you go with the former.

LunaandLily · 30/08/2024 21:26

Love it. Very chic and cool. I know one! She’s 8 and her parents get a lot of compliments for her name!

TeeBee · 30/08/2024 21:27

I think it's lovely.
