Thoughts on the name Rudy

We're due to have a baby boy soon and I've been reaching out for help with names. I've currently fallen for the name Rudy but only like the shortened version, not Ruldoph.
What's people's thoughts on just calling him Rudy as his first full name? I was thinking Oscar as a middle name so if when he is older or maybe wants something more formal/ conventional then he could use that if desired? Thanks :)

I think it's a lovely name

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/08/2024 22:06

Not my cup of tea personally - I just see the word rude or juvenile rhymes like “nudey rudey” (what we call it when young kids are refusing to get dressed and running around naked- but this might just be my family 🤣)

But Rudy is definitely better than Rudolph! That’s just asking for reindeer jokes all his life. I like similar style Rufus instead though? And Oscar is fine, if more popular as you said.

MeltedWispaBar · 04/08/2024 22:06

A message to you....!? (there's a song in there somewhere).

Seriously though, my thought is that Oscar comes across as an alternative first name, so how about Alexander or similar? Best wishes whatever you choose.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 04/08/2024 22:08

I love it.

3luckystars · 04/08/2024 22:09

The Cosby show had a Rudy. She was a girl though.

I like it!!

HoHoHoliday · 04/08/2024 22:10

It's a name I wish I could love because I like the style but it just makes me think of the word rude.

Ammefr · 04/08/2024 22:29

I love it, but I'm biased as my son is called Rudi 🤣

MissingMoominMamma · 04/08/2024 22:31

A message to you…

That’s the only thing I think of, and it’s not a negative.

shoopshoopdedoo · 04/08/2024 22:33

I’m not super keen - think it’s the “rude” thing. Love Oscar though!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/08/2024 22:35

I like it, although I would assume it was short for something.

EachandEveryone · 04/08/2024 22:43

Love it

ItchyPi · 04/08/2024 22:47

It's a dogs name to me. I've known 3 canine Rudys.

Also Rudy from Ice age springs to mind.

MerryMarys · 04/08/2024 23:03

Rudy sounds like someone Rude.

Koko83 · 04/08/2024 23:04

Love it 🥰

Greytulips · 04/08/2024 23:07

My Nan would use the word ruddy for something g annoying her avoiding a swear word.

Pronounced Roody sounds like Rudy Trudy

Cant say I know anyone by that name. I wouldn’t be in my top 10

SirChenjins · 04/08/2024 23:08

I don’t like it - the rude thing is too strong a connection.

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/08/2024 23:08

Rudy is a fab name! Do it!

notagdfriend · 04/08/2024 23:09

Where I'm from people use the expression rudey nudey

TenThousandSpoons · 04/08/2024 23:10

I know one who is a cat.
Rudey nudey connotation is strong but I still like it. Quite cool.

ThePoshUns · 04/08/2024 23:11

I love it, mainly because of the song.
Stop ya messing around!

DonnaHaywood · 04/08/2024 23:17

Can't fail!

Seriously, it does give limited options as he grows up. I can see why you don't want Rudolph, or Rudyard... A nickname for Robert, or Richard?

freddiesmumm · 04/08/2024 23:24

I love it! Had a quick glance at the comments and amazed to see MN actually seem to like it! Usually anything outwith the top 10 is a no go 🙈 It wouldn’t even occur to me that Rudolph could be the full name

BoleynMemories13 · 04/08/2024 23:30

I can't warm to it. The 'rude' part is just not a nice association, and I too thought rudey nudey so there could be some teasing potential there for his peers.

If you like 'ru' names there's Reuben or Rufus, which could both give the nickname Roo.

Or there's Jude, which also has that same, strong oo sound.

Zonder · 04/08/2024 23:36

I love it because of the song, but I'm not sure I'd use it. In ska music it refers to the rude boys, the rough kids getting into trouble.

RosaRoja · 04/08/2024 23:48

He was one of the brothers in “Rich Man, Poor Man”. The poor brother. I don’t think anyone of reproductive age is likely to know what I’m talking about, though. I quite like it. How about Rhodri.
