What do you think about these two names? I like the pronunciation 'Loo-KEE-a,' but does it sound weird in England?

I haven't heard that pronunciation. The Lucias I know are Loo chee ah.

Meowzabubz · 21/07/2024 13:48

Lucia is pronounced Lou-chee-ah

Meowzabubz · 21/07/2024 13:48

And Lukia sounds like Leukemia to me. Plus it looks ugly.

dementedpixie · 21/07/2024 13:49

I would say Loo-see-ah for Lucia
Never seen or heard the other spelling

BoleynMemories13 · 21/07/2024 13:50

I've never heard of Lu-kee-ah (and really dislike it I'm afraid). Where is it from?

Lucia is Lu-chee-ah in Italy, or Lu-see-ah in Spanish speaking countries (to my knowledge).

Lu-kee-ah sounds too much like IKEA to me! Or, as above, leukaemia. Definitely not what I'd want my child's name associated with.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 21/07/2024 13:51

Yes. It's a made up girl's name based on Luke.

Lucia is better, whether Loo-CHEE-a (my default) or Loo-SEE-a.

LlynTegid · 21/07/2024 13:51

Lucia.

Lukia would mean a lifetime of having to correct people. Be considerate and don't inflict that on your child.

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 21/07/2024 13:52

Lukia is not a pronunciation used in the uk ever

BackOfAsda · 21/07/2024 13:54

It's looCHEEa or LooSEEa or even LooSHa like the place but never ever LuKEEa which is odd

JimNast · 21/07/2024 14:04

It's Lucy-a, Loo-see-a, Looth-ee-a, Loosha, Lootch-ee-a, Lootseea depending on where you are.
It sounds weird here in a part of the UK that isn't England.

LegendInMyOwnLunchtime · 21/07/2024 14:14

The various pronunciation of Lucia in different languages is Loosha, LuCheeAh or LooSia

Is Lukia your own variation?

Anyway, not a fan of ‘unique’ variations that will never be spelled or said correctly without explanation.

newleafontheplantjohn · 21/07/2024 15:13

Reminds me of lochia. Not a good association.

I see from a pp it's a made up female version of Luke?

Really not keen. You can do better.

JimNast · 21/07/2024 16:57

@LegendInMyOwnLunchtime , it's from Latin and the pronunciation varies a lot, not just those 3.

TitusMoan · 21/07/2024 17:01

And leukorrhea. (Google it)

Just no to Lukia.

Notcontent · 21/07/2024 17:06

I don’t usually comment on baby name threads but this one made me laugh!! Lucia, pronounced correctly, is a lovely name.

Echobelly · 21/07/2024 17:10

If I heard Lukia I'd probably assume a continental boy's name, not a girl's name, and I don't think it looks or sounds very nice so wouldn't go for.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/07/2024 17:14

Is 'loo-kee-a' a genuine, recognised way of pronouncing this name in a particular language? I've never heard it before. Not a fan tbh.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 21/07/2024 17:17

Ikea (Eye-Lee-ah) sounds prettier than Lukia

Lukia sounds like a cross between Nokia and leukaemia

Lucia is much more feminine (loo-see-ah or loo-chee-ah)

KirstenBlest · 21/07/2024 17:24

Welsh, @AllProperTeaIsTheft ?(basing it on Welsh being phonetic). Smile
I think hard-core Welsh might spell it Lwsïa, or stick to the lovely Welsh version, Lleucu.

KirstenBlest · 21/07/2024 17:26

@SonicTheHodgeheg , Ikea isn't pronounced Eye-lee-ah. It's Eye-kee-ah or Ick-ay-ah, AFAIK

PerkyMintDeer · 21/07/2024 17:31

Sorry, Lukia is horrible...like Lochia!

Lucia never has a hard C (k) sound.

It's loo-chee-a
loo-see-a
loo-sha

Kia as a standalone name might work (but...it's a car). Luisa/Louisa are beautiful alternatives.
But Lukia, nope.

Chersfrozenface · 21/07/2024 17:39

I've checked all the pronunciations I can find in various European languages, including Slavic ones, and the 'c' isn't pronounced like a 'k' in any one of them

Ah ok. I'm not quite sure - do you mean that loo-KEE-a is a recognised Welsh pronunciation of Lucia, or that there's an actual Welsh version of the name 'Lucia' which is pronounced that way? Or just that that's probably how a Welsh speaker might pronounce the name Lucia if they came across it?

They wouldn't pronounce it like that anyway since 'u' isn't pronounced 'oo' in Welsh.

KirstenBlest · 21/07/2024 17:55

It would be more like Lick-ee-a. Smile

@AllProperTeaIsTheft , of course it's not a recognised Welsh pronunciation. It was a joke.
