What do you think about these two names? I like the pronunciation 'Loo-KEE-a,' but does it sound weird in England?

Lucia is pronounced Lou-chee-ah

Not always.

My friend is Loo-sea-a

I've checked all the pronunciations I can find in various European languages, including Slavic ones, and the 'c' isn't pronounced like a 'k' in any one of them

The source of the pronunciation is noted as "Automated".

So an artificial pronunciation created by a machine, not a real world pronunciation by a speaker of any of the languages I've checked.

You didn't try Welsh @JRBS . I did. Grin

Well, it is a very old-fashioned and rare Russian name derived from the male name Luka or its Greek version Λουκᾶς, the female Greek version is Λουκὶα

I read Lukia as Lochia.

JimNast · 21/07/2024 19:09

@JRBS , if you like it, use it.

@SonicTheHodgeheg , Ikea isn't pronounced Eye-lee-ah. It's Eye-kee-ah or Ick-ay-ah, AFAIK

It is but Eye-Kee-ah is the most common pronunciation that I hear in England

GoodVibesHere · 21/07/2024 19:59

Look here

JimNast · 21/07/2024 20:30

@SonicTheHodgeheg , you said Eye-lee-ah

This is an ugly pronunciation

bridgetreilly · 21/07/2024 20:41

I think it would be spelled Loukia in English, but I really don’t like it.

Unless you're 'very old fashioned and Russian' OP, don't use it. Your daughter will be grateful.

Lucia is pronounced Lou-chee-ah

Not necessarily- I know of three different pronunciations. Loo- see-ah, Loo-chee-ah and Loo-kee-ah. All are correct in different countries.

Exactly!

Sorry, Lukia is horrible...like Lochia!

Lucia never has a hard C (k) sound.

It's loo-chee-a
loo-see-a
loo-sha

Kia as a standalone name might work (but...it's a car). Luisa/Louisa are beautiful alternatives.
But Lukia, nope.

Edited

When you say never, do you mean other than in Latin which is the language it originates from?

atticstage · 21/07/2024 21:03

It's one thing to be snobby about names, but another to be ignorant and snobby.

I mean in countries where English is the first language.

"Latin is a language as dead as it can be..".😉

If you want 'unique' and aren't bothered about your daughter having to repeatedly spell her name forever, then go for it.

Spirallingdownwards · 22/07/2024 02:25

Why ask what people think and then argue back when they say it is awful? Use it or don't use it.

TenThousandSpoons · 22/07/2024 05:13

Lucia is lovely.

Your child can no doubt be taught to offer that explanation of the extraordinary pronunciation loo-KEE-a, after she's corrected people who call her Lochia.

sparkles79 · 22/07/2024 05:49

It's an awful name in English. Lucia is a pretty name.

BlastedPimples · 22/07/2024 06:17

Lukia is ugly.

Lucia is pretty. And pronounced as others have suggested.

hopsalong · 22/07/2024 06:49

Don't give your child a name with a normal spelling but an eccentric pronunciation.

I know someone professionally called Sandra who insists on the name being pronounced with a short 'a', as in sand.

Most people still say 'sarn-dra', as in 'barn'. I try to avoid saying her name at all because I feel silly if I use her preferred pronunciation.

You don't want a lifetime of that.
