What do you think of the name Luna?

We are sort of stuck on it for a girl but I am not 100% sure though I do keep coming back to it and swing from loving it to thinking it may sound a bit astrological.

We need a soft name to go with a rather harsh surname full of C's. Also - can anyone suggest a middle name that might go with it??

DD has my middle name and if we have a boy, he will have DH's, so if it is a girl, what do we do??

Hmmm has to be a no from me too. Instantly thought of Bear in the big blue house.

belgo · 13/04/2008 08:56

Luna is popular in Belgium.

I prefer Stella if you want another astrological name.

Too on par with Summer and Storm for my liking. Also have a restaurant near us called Luna Caprese. Lunatic? or has that already been done? You call her just what you want pet

LemonTart · 13/04/2008 09:05

I think Luna is lovely and can see why you are attracted to it. Easy to spell, it sounds lovely when spoken, different and unusual..
On a practical note I would be wary. I know you can find fault with every name but there are some glaring ways this can be used as a teasing/bullying device by others. I just asked my 6 yr old what she thought of the name (and she likes unusual names as she suggested StarFire and Thunderbolt for my pregnant sister to consider). Immediately she said "uh? Looona?? ha-ha that sounds like ballooona or Tuna.."
not a big hit. Sorry.

Monkeytrousers · 13/04/2008 09:09

I think it's lovely. Go for it

hazeyjane · 13/04/2008 10:16

I think it's lovely, Diane Keaton's character from Sleeper was called Luna, and what's wrong with Bear in the Big Blue House?!

Would probably have an oldfashioned name like Alice or Beth as a middle name.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 13/04/2008 10:27

I like the names Lia or Lea over Luna which may just go with your difficult surname.

I know Luna as a surname in Spanish. I also love the book the Tales of Eva Luna.

morningpaper · 13/04/2008 10:31

Terrible, everyone will call her 'Loonie Luna' at school

don't do it

MeMySonAndI · 13/04/2008 10:34

Erm.... I wouldn't use it as a name, if you were in a Spanish speaking country... Luna is a dog's name.

Mind you, as a surname, it is not bad. (BTW, I loved the Tales of Eva Luna so much that I wrote a dissertation on it!)

dozymare · 13/04/2008 10:41

you know what, call your child what you will and not based on the opinions of Mn'ers....You will always have people who say "love it" and people that slag it of, even if you were suggesting something like Jane you would get split opinions. My parents called me a very unusual name in 1973 (when the trend was for Sarah's, Sharon's, Dawn's Claire's etc) yet a derivative of my name is now in the top 10 for this year. I really think when naming your child you go with what you want. I was really teased as a child and called all sorts of silly names, but then as another MN has posted, she was called Lucy and had name calling as well.

AS for middle names, how about something a bit more traditional such as Grace or Elizabeth then your child will have the option of a more acceptable (at least on here!) name!!!!!

rockinmum · 13/04/2008 11:49

Frank Lampards litle girl is named Luna Coco Patricia Lampard. I think it's a lovely name, better than going to school with a million other little girls caleld the same thing.

Hope you come to a decision based on your own preferences and not those of people you have never met.

Always nice to have an opinion from someone else though.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 13/04/2008 21:12

You're absolutely right and I know that for every name there will be people that love it and people that hate it and the child becomes their name too anyway BUT it is good to hear other people's gut reactions and thoughts!

I had never thought of it rhyming with tuna - how cool!

hum dee hum

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/04/2008 21:31

I agree with a suggestion above, Stella or Estella are nicer.

avaj · 15/04/2008 13:51

I think Luna is a lovely name. How about Luna Mae ?
One of my fave books is Eva Luna by Isabell Allende......interesting huh?

willow5 · 15/04/2008 13:56

Hi,
My little girl has a cousin called Luna, and I think it's a really beautiful name. We live in Norway, so it's quite an international name.

Brangelina · 15/04/2008 13:57

Luna is a fairly popular name in Italy (not a dog's name). It doesn't rhyme with tuna either, unless you pronounce it toona. I think it's quite nice, it wasn't on my names list only because the person I knew with that name put me off, not for the name itself.

Just call her what you want, whatever name you choose will be criticised by someone, so you might as well go for the controversial one right away.

MadameCh0let · 15/04/2008 16:48

the sound of it is pretty, but the meaning is just too .. lunar.

I think it would be a pretty nn though, perhaps short for Louisa Naomi

Lula
Lucinda

MrsMattie · 15/04/2008 17:00

I could imagine it being really pretty pronounced in a thick Spanish accent and referring to a gorgeous, waif-like, black-eyed little girl. Over here it just sounds naff.

snorlax · 16/04/2008 15:23

How about Selina? meaning sky or heaven.
