What do you think of the name Luna?

We are sort of stuck on it for a girl but I am not 100% sure though I do keep coming back to it and swing from loving it to thinking it may sound a bit astrological.

We need a soft name to go with a rather harsh surname full of C's. Also - can anyone suggest a middle name that might go with it??

DD has my middle name and if we have a boy, he will have DH's, so if it is a girl, what do we do??

I have heard the posh spice thing too. She has said that that would be her girls name. The fact that she likes it would put me off too! Another footballer has it too for his daughter (can't remember who, but one with a well known WAG - can't remember her name either)

Oooh so many replies - thank you!

We can't have Laura as that's DH's PA's name
I know loads of Leila's
Helena & sarah are two of my cousin's names

Oh this is a minefield!!!!

My French friend's daughter is called Louna. I had chosen Lila if we had a girl.

artichokes · 12/04/2008 21:54

What about Lullah as a short version of Tallulah? I knew a Tallulah known as Lullah and she was the sweetest thing.

artichokes · 12/04/2008 21:55

Sorry, I spelt that wrong. Lulah, pronounced Loolah.

Renaissancewoman · 12/04/2008 22:00

Luna Skywalker
Luna Lala
Luna Eclipse

Nappyzone · 12/04/2008 22:06

I instantly thought of the mamas and papas pram system - sorry. If you are stuck on it then go for it.

dirtygertiefromnumber30 · 12/04/2008 22:07

i think of lunar jim.

Amapoleon · 12/04/2008 22:08

What about Soraya pronounced serraier/soraier depends on your accent really

PersephoneSnape · 12/04/2008 22:13

Leona? you could call her Luna as a pet name.

i think Luna in Harry potter had great strength of character and didn't care that people thought she was Loopy Luna. of course your Dd might not appreciate that, but i think it's good to give a child a name that you like. lets face it the horrid children will tease for something if they want to, if it isn't name it's hair or teeth or height or, or, or...

VictorianSqualor · 12/04/2008 22:15

Another one who immediately thought of HP, was going to comment about the Nargles..

GruffaloSoldier · 12/04/2008 22:15

Laura, Lydia, Lorna, Lena

If you do go for Luna:

Luna Violet?

expatinscotland · 12/04/2008 22:16

Lavinia

I read her name, somewhere. Nathaniel Hawthorne short story, I think. I always liked the names he chose for his female characters.

Piffle · 12/04/2008 22:19

hink of the shortenings by others
Luna = loo
lavinia ( which I adore) = lav need one hell of a personality to carry that off!
I prefer estella or Stella

Remotew · 12/04/2008 22:22

My sis is Estelle and never shorterned. I was going to suggest Lorna.

nappyaddict · 12/04/2008 22:27

i thought of the buggy too nappy.

GruffaloSoldier · 12/04/2008 22:29

Sticking with astrological theme:

Lyra : The name of the constellation in the northern sky containing the star Vega. It is said to be shaped after the lyre of Orpheus

Lula, Luann, Luella

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 12/04/2008 22:30

Oh dear - I do ADORE the name Lyra - so much so I almost can't discuss anything else. I have just asked DH if it has to come of the list and he didn't say no, he just said that he wants Luna...... this may take some time....

OP posts:
PersephoneSnape · 12/04/2008 22:32

Lyra - silvertounge (if you want a fabulous female heroine in childrens literature)

Lorna - Doone

Leona (oh god!) Lewis!!

barnstaple · 12/04/2008 22:38

Someone was asking about the name Renaisse recently. Some people made the very good point that people will relate to your child and ultimately the name will be part and parcel of her.

Who knows whether people will really remember Harry Potter that well by the time your lo starts nursery/school etc?

At school the obvious nickname is Lunatic, but hey, she could still get some horrible nickname if she was called Sarah. Or Mary. Or Jane. We had an Amy who for some reason was called Maimed! Kids are inventive!

And by the way, I thought Luna was one of the most interesting and nicest characters in the series.

VictorianSqualor · 12/04/2008 22:51

DP told me about a girl at school they called 'clive manley' she had a really normal name before that, if you're going to get a horrid nickname it will happen no matter what you're called.

AitchTwoOh · 12/04/2008 22:56

i think that people will think of loony lovegod the first time they hear it, and then after that it'll be your child's name. plus, like barnie says, she is a really good, strong independent character. if you think you can carry it off, go for it.

Like Luna but how about Eluned (sp?)

Dragonbutter · 12/04/2008 23:03

I can see the attraction to astrological names. We have a Sol.
But i'm not really liking the name Luna as it has negative 'insanity' connotations.
What about Tara, Venus, Star, Nyx, Soleil, Ciel, Gaia ?
