What do you think of the name Luna?

We are sort of stuck on it for a girl but I am not 100% sure though I do keep coming back to it and swing from loving it to thinking it may sound a bit astrological.

We need a soft name to go with a rather harsh surname full of C's. Also - can anyone suggest a middle name that might go with it??

DD has my middle name and if we have a boy, he will have DH's, so if it is a girl, what do we do??

I thought of the bear in the blue house and the goodbye song. My dc's loved bear

I have only ever heard this word used as a name twice. Once in Harry Potter to describe the weird, friendless girl. And once in an interview with Posh Spice when she said it was the name she would use if she had a daughter. Sorry but neither of those examples make me warm to it.

I really think that it would be ineveitable that a girl called Luna would be teased.

once your child has appeared then she will just be luna. unless you decide on another name, that one will be perfect too.

there is some sort of mania on mn re names, it really DOESN'T MATTER.

makes me think of Bear talking on his verander to Luna at end of his programme....

bristols · 12/04/2008 21:16

My SIL is called Luna and I think it's such a pretty name. Mind you, I have never read Harry Potter or seen Bear in the Big Blue house!

Any other soft names ending in 'a' or 'o' sounds??

blimey expat, its a fairly common name!

(not mine i hasten to add)

expatinscotland · 12/04/2008 21:18

Luna's just a daft name except for characters in books about wands and wizards.

Good name for a pet rat, though.

Louisa is lovely.

MaloryTT may be on the something with that.

Soft, not common (in any sense) and certainly not 'twatty.'

artichokes · 12/04/2008 21:22

Leila (pronouned Lay-la) is a nice alternative. As TMMJ says it means night. It is Arabic origin. Really pretty and a very similar sound to Luna.

our dd has an "astrological" name and i love it being honest not keen on luna but it's not up to me is it?

possible middle names:
belle
may
maria

Remotew · 12/04/2008 21:26

Luna is a bit way out and I've never heard of it as a name. Perhaps that's the attraction. Agree it open to Looney taunts. Dont know what to suggest on a similar trend, sorry.

How about Lentil? heard this tonight on that John Barryman quiz with brainy kids but she looked to half chinese.

I dont like luna, just to easy to add "tic" to.

StillWaters · 12/04/2008 21:29

Stella is a very cool name IMO.

But is quite a 'hard' name.
