What is it about the name Kaiden/Kayden that people don’t like?

I’ve seen comments like, ‘well at least it’s not Kaiden/Kayden’ or ‘I can’t stand those Kaiden/Kayden/Jaiden names.’ I even saw someone say, ‘all the Kaiden/Jaiden and Mary-Louise act like X in my area.’

I’m just curious really!

Klamydia, of course with a "Y"! 😳

I work in NHS admin and there is a child with "Mazin" as middle name and I dread to think that it's come from "amazing"

How do you know it wasn't a last name used as a middle name?

I related to, friends with, acquainted with, have studied and worked with people whose family names you cannot guess by their appearance and come from all over the world.

princesspeppax · 10/05/2024 21:30

I'm saddened to read this thread, I have a Kaiden, he is not a chav. I just loved the name, still do. We are not low class. 2 very hard working parents.

Our Kaiden is a handsome, wonderful, intelligent and funny boy! I'm upset to think so many people apparently judge and label us/him based on the name?! I cant say its something i've ever done before...I never even realised there was such a hate towards certain names until this thread!

ilikespaniels · 10/05/2024 21:31

According to most people on MN, the real behavioural problems are now the reserve of the gentle parents who feebly tell Rupert or Hugo to use gentle hands.

So the children with behavioural problems can’t be called Kaiden. Surely. 🙄

What's wrong with American names?

What does the name mean?

The dislike of certain north American names is due to the fact if you ask someone what their kids name means they can't tell you.

I only worked this out when a friend said something similar then immediately said "What does the name mean?" Oddly she is the only one who said this about names.

Pleasestopkickingme · 10/05/2024 21:33

@Maroonedjam then why not cool it a bit, eh? People are entitled to their opinion without having their choice of language criticised or comments made about their suitability for certain professions based on their opinions on a name. It's folks like you that give Mumsnet its reputation as a vipers nest.

Hugo and Rupert are badly behaved toddlers and infant school children.

Kaiden/Jayden are badly behaved teens.

(Incidentally the only Jayden I know is white, WC, well-behaved and extremely sensible. His parents...)

Maroonedjam · 10/05/2024 21:35

I'm sure the shrieking running about children ruining peoples evenings in high end restaurants that MN is so keen to moan about are probably called James or Henry. Those chavvy kids will all be at the Toby Carvery.

What? Are you seriously telling me to shut up because I don't agree with the majority? Nope, not gonna happen.

It’s a class thing. As much as it makes us uncomfortable, Britain is a hugely class-based society. And we choose our baby’s name either due to being influenced by our class, or to try to appear a different class to the one we are.

Upper-class and upper-middle-class people don’t call their children Kaiden. There are some names which are exclusively upper class and the rest of us look ridiculous if we emulate them (they are ridiculous too, but they get away with it because of the massive buffer of privilege they have): Jolyon, St John, Septimus etc. The names of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s children, basically. These are paradoxically often names which are rejected by the truly upper class (ie Royalty).

Then there are names which the upper and middle classes both like and are favoured by royalty, but they are not as commonly chosen by the working class. Think Edward, Elizabeth, Henry.

Then there are names which are popular in all classes and it’s genuinely hard to tell a person’s background from the name alone: Matthew, James, Charlotte, Thomas, Harriet, Grace, Georgia, Victoria would be examples. There are loads.

Then there are names which are more exclusively middle and working class and as likely to be chosen by either. These tend to be popular and come and go in waves. Currently I would put Evie, Lily, Oliver, Harry, Ava in this category. Historically you’d be looking at names such as Gemma, Lauren, Nicola.

Finally there are names which are more exclusively working class. Kaiden, Jayden, Neveah, hyphenated names such as Lillie-Mae. There’s nothing wrong with these names! But they are definitely associated with a working class background, rather than being neutral.

Well my family are all working class so you’ve definitely got that right😁

Edited to say, thank you for taking the time to write all of that, it makes a lot of sense

It isn’t Maroonedjam giving MN this particular reputation, on this thread at any rate.

It really isnt cricket being unpleasant about children because they might be poor, old bean.

That's a real shame. Please don't worry about it. Your Kaiden isn't coming from an unstable/chaotic home so the negative association doesn't apply to him. I genuinely don't think the stereotype is enough to hold him back in any way. It's more when you see the name along with
disruptive behaviour in school. A well-mannered Kaiden will be absolutely fine.

They'll always be some arseholes, like the ones who still refer to people as "chavs", but we can ignore them. Just be very proud of your boy.

GagCity · 10/05/2024 21:41

Alwayswonderedwhy · 10/05/2024 21:19

I work in schools and the kids with made up names are definitely more likely to have behavioural issues, bad attitudes etc. Often parents that choose these types of names aren't the best role models.

See now this is the type of logic (if you can call it that) that I don’t understand. You hear the name Kaiden and that means that his parents most likely aren’t good role models.

So what do you think when you hear the name Timothy? His parents could be crack addicts and spend most of their time in a trap house.

I understanding a name having something to do with class but assuming the lives of the parents based on a name? Madness

@Maroonedjam there's a difference between not agreeing with the majority and just being an arse for the sake of it to those who don't agree with you.

GagCity · 10/05/2024 21:43

Maroonedjam · 10/05/2024 21:22

I sincerely hope that none of you with your name prejudices do not work in schools. You have written these children off just on their names.

I agree! We can all have opinions on a name but making an assumption and judging the kind of background the child comes from based on a name is unreasonable imo

To add to my previous post: class isn’t automatically an indication of wealth. Many footballers (the Rooneys for example) are culturally working class and remain so, while being wealthy beyond the wildest dreams of most of us. Conversely a significant number of upper class people have incomes which are a lot more modest than perhaps people assume. Class is a fascinating thing!

So sorry that I’ve upset you, try not to take the comments to heart! I have a Kaiden and he’s the best boy ever. I’d seen a lot of negative comments towards this name and wanted to find out more hence why I started the thread.

My Kaiden definitely isn’t a ‘chav,’ has two working parents and is lovely overall. We are working class but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that either. We can’t please everyone

Anyone who refers to children as 'chavs' are arseholes and if that makes me a viper. I'll live with that.

In my area, its white benefits street Britain types that have kaydens/jaydens 😬

weegiemum · 10/05/2024 22:40

I met my uni aged son's friend Kayden today. They came round to earn a bit of money by painting our fence. Funnily enough, ds is Aidan!

One of the nicest kids (well kid is wrong, he's 22 but all my dcs friends still feel like kids!) I've met. Not chavvy at all, a farm boy from Aberdeen-shire.

Names mean nothing in the end. And I say that as a secondary school teacher!

Lovetoshop365 · 12/05/2024 07:07

The name Jaydon is actually a Hebrew name meaning "thankful" or "he will judge". There are different spelling variations but I'm sure 99% of the people who have chosen this name don't know its meaning. So no its not a made up name.

Jadon/Yadon is the Hebrew name.

Jayden and its rhyming neighbours are modern invented names that just happen to sound similar. They're not etymologically related.

I'm sure your Kaiden is great! Having preconceptions about, or even disliking, a name shouldn't mean judging the person. I'm a teacher and it would be impossible not to notice that some names are predominantly used by particular demographics, but that doesn't mean you treat someone differently for having a particular name.

Ironfloor269 · 12/05/2024 10:27

I knew siblings Keagan and Kai. Terrible behaviour. Ran riot in the neighbourhood. Their mother used to shout abuse at whoever told her precious sons off for their disruptive behaviour. They eventually moved to Blackpool, like the mothership calling them home. 😂
