Maiden name as a first name?

We have really struggled with names for boys. Hayes is my maiden name and will ‘die out’ this generation as we’re a family of girls and no one kept it. Would it be strange as a first name or is it better saved for middle?

There are so many great names out there to choose from - Hayes isn’t one of them. I’d keep it as a middle name or double barrel it

Unusual but I like it, much more interesting than all the kids with identikit names all the time and it’s a ‘real’ name not completely made up, I’d do it :)

It's a bit naff really. It would be tiresome when people ask 'where does your unusual name come from' and having to say 'aww it was my mother's maiden name so she called me it'. It's just a bit lazy when there are so many nice names to choose from.

It’s lovely, and a really nice idea too if you can’t double barrel.
very common in UK in previous generations.
Fitzwilliam Darcy of course had his mum’s maiden name.
i have two friends my age (late 40’s) who also have their mum’s maiden name as a first name - Alexander and Thomas

It’s ok as a first name. My friend did this for her DS she named him Thomas her maiden name.

I like Hayes for a first name. I say go for it! The reason behind it is meaningful and it's cool sounding!

As a first name people will hear it as Haze , v boho / hippy.

Stop being a pushover and give your kid your name

It’s a nice tradition in Scotland and the US to do this, but I don’t think Hayes works well as a first name sadly

Could you add it to the end of your husband’s surname to make a doubled barrelled name? Hayes would likely combine well with most things. That would make a lot of sense if you’re bothered about it dying out.

I would use it as a middle name. It will end up getting spelt as Haze if you use it as a first name.

My DS has my maiden name as his middle name. It’s actually a recognised male name though (like Thomas or Scott). I would use Hayes as a middle name instead.

A minor point to bear in mind - if you and DH ever split up, would you want to switch back to your birth surname?

OP didn’t ask for an opinion on her surname.
Not everyone likes over long and unwieldy double-barrelled names. Some of us also like all members of our family having the same name.

It’s very common in N Ireland with the result that there are some quite strange names. Hayes, in comparison is unusual but not strange and is a lot better than some of the terrible names kids get lumbered with these days!

If you like it, use it. I think it sounds really nice, for a boy or a girl.
