Maiden name as a first name?

We have really struggled with names for boys. Hayes is my maiden name and will ‘die out’ this generation as we’re a family of girls and no one kept it. Would it be strange as a first name or is it better saved for middle?

Boy or girl?
Weirdly we currently have a small boy in school called Hayes. Family comes from Hong Kong.
No idea where they’ve got it from.
It’s unusual obviously and could have several spellings. I’m not a huge fan personally.

You are aware that Hong Kong is a former British colony?

Therefore unsurprisingly parents in former British colonies often choose to give their children European names.

Anyway Hayes is a rundown area in West London. Apparently it derived from Anglo Saxon word and means "land overgrown with" brushwood.

I simply meant that it is a very unusual name. I’m not sure where they would have got it from. I completely understand why they may have picked a European name. Just not this particular one.

I quite like it as a first name but if I didn't use it I would start using it as a double barrelled surname, so it doesn't die out. X
