Hey, how many boys do you know with names like Mark, John, Matthew, Phil, Paul, Richard, William etc.? I feel like Daniel and David are somewhat common, but I haven't come across anyone with those other names in a while. Just curious!

I know a couple of Matthews and a David who are primary aged. And a toddler John!

Fizbosshoes · 08/04/2024 18:39

I know 2 Matthews (tween/teen) 4 teen Williams, a teen Peter and a teen Michael (the latter 2 i think of as "older" names)
I don't think I know anyone called John under the age of 30 but I do know a Jonathan who is about 10.

My kids are teenagers so I know less primary age kids

Absolutely loads but then I'm the child of a minister and have spent most of my life in church/Christian circles where all the Christian kids are named after John, Mark, Paul etc. Grin

These haven't dropped quite as far as they seen re popularity if you check on Dark Greener :)

John is still number 154 for example.

I know a baby John, 1 year old Matthew and several Daniel and David’s.

My kids are at a church school, so saints names are common.

I know teenage Johns and Matthew's. The youngest Mark I know is in his 40s.

Ohlookwhoitis · 08/04/2024 20:15

I know a Matthew, John and Phillip. All were in my DDs class at school. Aged 11/12 now.

Therunecaster · 08/04/2024 20:32

My boy is an 18 year old Mark!

MuddledMadge · 23/04/2024 14:17

I met a 2 year old Colin.

I know of a 5yo Marc, 1yo Paul, a couple of pre-teen Matthews, a 6yo John and 6yo Richard who goes by Ricky.

Several Williams and two Johns. None of the rest under mid 20s. The Williams have a variety of nicknames - two Wills, one Billy, one Yummy (!)

Firebird83 · 23/04/2024 21:46

I know a few Williams and a John, all primary age. Also a primary age Philipp with German parents.

miniaturepixieonacid · 23/04/2024 22:04

Matthew - one who is 15. Otherwise, all adults.
Mark - no. All 30+
John - no. Youngest in their 20s and they're both short for Jonathan. My sister considered it for my baby nephew after our dad but used it as a middle name in the end.
Phil - definitely not. All late 30s on.
Richard - one aged 10.
Paul - no. All 30s+
William - absolutely. Dozens. Still a hugely popular name in my experience.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/04/2024 22:05

I do know a Mark in his late teens but I admit it does feel a touch middle aged now, same with Philip, Paul and Richard (see also Stephen, Gregory etc).

William’s a different type of name all together - I know ones of all ages, just with different nn’s depending on age (that one’s a classic that’s never going to disappear thanks to Shakespeare imo). I’d put names like James, Edward, Alexander etc in the same category.

John and Matthew, I would put in a kind of in between category- they feel very classic and I know a few younger ones but the names do seem to rise and fall in popularity a bit more (see also Robert and maybe David, Michael etc).

MolkosTeenageAngst · 23/04/2024 22:09

I know a baby William and a few pre-school and primary school age boys, 2 of them are known as Billy and the others as William.

I know one John of primary school age and one Matthew.

I don’t know any children called Mark, Phil, Paul, Richard. I do know a 6-year-old Neil though and a baby Steven already known as Steve.

goldenretrievermum5 · 24/04/2024 03:45

Quite a few Matthews, 2 Johns and one William. None of the others (yet)

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 24/04/2024 04:09

Matthew and William are timeless - I’ve been teaching for over 20 years and have known lots over the years. John appears to be making a comeback but I’ve only taught one Richard in that time and no Marks or Phillips.

Koptforitagain · 24/04/2024 04:17

I don’t know any Matthews. It’s a beautiful name. ❤️

Three little John's!? Interesting. Maybe John is gaining popularity once more.

The youngest Mark I know is also in his 30s.

My DS is called Mark. He’s 16.

Yerto · 29/09/2024 16:10

I know quite a few little William's (primary school & under)
1 toddler Johnny
1 toddler Michael

No Mark/Phil/Richard/David
