Hey, how many boys do you know with names like Mark, John, Matthew, Phil, Paul, Richard, William etc.? I feel like Daniel and David are somewhat common, but I haven't come across anyone with those other names in a while. Just curious!

I know a Luke too!

Is Luke unusual now? I had two in my class in primary and this was a village school with max 60 students!

SO many Williams. Some Matthews.

pontipinemum · 07/04/2024 11:25

I know a 5 yr old Matthew, lovely name.

A 10ish year old William, goes by Liam

Not the others

Freefree · 07/04/2024 11:27

I know 2 little John-Pauls.
Lots of Williams but none of the others

Mumofgirls2017 · 07/04/2024 11:34

I know 2 little Matthews and 2 Johns! Also know an Andrew, Adrian, Hugh, 2 Roberts and a Peter.

Hobbesmanc · 07/04/2024 11:43

I think John is definitely due a return to popularity. It's sturdy no nonsense kind of name. See also David, Henry, Peter. I think Matthew and William along with James, Daniel, Thomas, George are timeless and classless so will always be around.

Dewdilly · 07/04/2024 11:48

I know a young John and a Richard. Quite a few Williams.

bingoringo4 · 07/04/2024 11:50

I know loads of little johns and marks because I'm from culture where the first son is named after their father. A girl I know just named her baby Raymond after her husband.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 07/04/2024 11:50

No little ones but you basically just listed my own class from primary school. I think most are 30s-40s so it'll come around again in twenty years or so

sosuemee · 07/04/2024 11:52

In the primary I used to teach at there are currently children named Matthew, John and William.

Zola1 · 07/04/2024 12:06

I know zero little Marks or Johns. Matthew is still quite common though.

KirstenBlest · 07/04/2024 12:53

I know teenagers called Mark, John and Andrew. Only one of each but the names seem fresher than Archie, Alfie, Theo and Noah.

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/04/2024 13:09

Matthew is still popular and I know a few around primary age. That is not the case for Mark and John. I know a few of both and they'd be in their 50's.

DearSilverGirl · 07/04/2024 13:10

I know quite a few Johns, Matthews, Williams. Haven’t met a baby Phil though!

GiantRoadPuzzle · 07/04/2024 13:11

Yes to Matthews and Williams, no to the rest.

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that my grandchildren are likely to be called things like Phillip, Brian, Susan and Pauline, so assuming my great-grandchildren will be Louise, Gavin, Mark and Claire.

PollyPeep · 07/04/2024 13:12

I know a toddler called John and a pre-school aged Mark! I was surprised by both names. I think John is due a comeback! Strong for a man and Johnnie is nice for a little boy / teen.

TheLong · 07/04/2024 13:13

Matthew, Richard, Peter, Andrew, Thomas all very popular baby names where I am - rural Scotland.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 07/04/2024 13:20

God I hate the name Mark. Such a nothing name
Under the age of 10 a know a Peter, Robert, 2 Johns, Matthew, William and 2 Lukes.
No Pauls, Marks, Richards or Phillips though.
There are going to be 100s of Johns as so many grandads and great grandads were Johns (at one point 1 in every 50 boys or men in England were called John).

mitogoshi · 07/04/2024 13:23

Quite a few Matthew's and know a William (Billy)

ZaraEarrings · 07/04/2024 13:27

I work with children.

William is very common. Matthew is pretty common too, and I’ve heard of recent baby Matthews.

I hardly ever come across Mark or John. One Marc, now that I think of it (he’s European).

Georgie743 · 07/04/2024 13:28

I teach primary - several Williams and Matthews (and a couple of Matteos - large Italian area).

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 07/04/2024 13:29

Not in UK, but not too far away. I know a few young Matthews. William would never have been too popular here (politics/culture), but David, Mark, Jonny and Patrick certainly aren't unheard of. I have primary aged dc with classmates with these names. I know of a few Filipino families through work, and these more traditional names seem popular for boys. Not so traditional with the girls names though

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 07/04/2024 14:03

I know of several William/Will, a couple of them choose to use Liam now they are teens.

Two Matthews of primary age.

No Johns, but I'd love to see it come back as I think it's a great strong name.

Colinfromaccounts24 · 07/04/2024 14:06

There is a Mark in DDs class (age 8). I don’t know any of the others though.

Ankylo · 07/04/2024 14:08

Yes, I know a baby John (born last year)
