Hey, how many boys do you know with names like Mark, John, Matthew, Phil, Paul, Richard, William etc.? I feel like Daniel and David are somewhat common, but I haven't come across anyone with those other names in a while. Just curious!

I know 1 Matthew, a Jonathan and a Jonty but no John. I know 4 little Williams.

Greeniswonderful · 07/04/2024 14:13

William yes I think that’s still fairly popular

AuntieStella · 07/04/2024 14:15

Lots of primary age and younger Matthews, and Williams of all ages.

No Marks younger than their 50s, but a couple of Marcuses (youngest of which must be 20ish by now)

No Johns, but one Jonathan (but I think a fair few have John as a middle name)

A couple of Richards (must be teens by now)
One Paul (ditto)
No Philips

Only one David

Lots of Daniels of all ages

Luke had pretty much dropped out of use, until Star Wars came along, and I think it's the most frequently used apostle name now

Fashions change, and I think the cycle might now be beginning to turn towards the next generation "grandpa" names: like those in OP and Simon, Nicholas, Timothy, Anthony, Peter

Hellocatshome · 07/04/2024 14:16

Matthew and John yes. Mark I dont know of one under 30.

OutOfTheHouse · 07/04/2024 14:21

I teach primary. I’ve taught plenty of Williams and Thomases recently. I had a Mark about 7 or 8 years ago. I’ve known a few Daniels, Johns and Davids but they tend to be from families that have moved to the U.K. from Eastern Europe or African nations.

Marghogeth · 07/04/2024 14:24

I know a Henry, a Samuel and a Daniel. All aged under 8.

RoseMartha · 07/04/2024 14:25

I was out the other week and there was an easter egg hunt where we were and a little boy age 4 or so was called Simon which you dont hear much of under 30.

I know some teenage Matthew's. And Jonathan's. Not the other names though.

blueandwhitesquares · 07/04/2024 14:26

I have a Peter he's 3

Marghogeth · 07/04/2024 14:26

When I had my last, three out of the four new babies in my bay were called Henry!

Is James not popular in UK anymore?

BoleynMemories13 · 07/04/2024 17:28

I've taught 3 Williams who are all 12 or younger and know of one 2 year old. Not surprising as it's near the top 20 and has been for many many years now. Lovely traditional, timeless name.

I know a newborn John, named after his grandfather (I'm really not a fan, personally).

You can't move for boys called Richard, Daniel and David at my school. All seem to be very popular among Eastern European families and certain African cultures. I don't mind David and Daniel, much less keen on Richard. Adam is quite popular too among our Eastern European families.

I know of one primary aged Matthew. It's one of my favourite boys names, very underused these days.

The youngest Paul and Mark I know of would be early 20s now. Both feel dated to me but I prefer Mark to Paul. Marcus is nicer though.

Names of this style I'd like to see back in regular usage, along with Matthew, are Michael, Peter, Christopher and Simon. Maybe Jonathan, I much prefer this to just John. Robert is ok but Philip can stay in the past.

Thomas and James are very much in the same style too but both statistically very popular still (rightly so imo).

KirstenBlest · 07/04/2024 17:51

Is James not popular in UK anymore?
It's still popular, but not as popular as it was about 25 yrs ago, when it seemed like all boy babies were Jack or James

SpikeGilesSandwich · 07/04/2024 18:10

There's a Richard and a Phillip in reception at DS's primary school. And several young Williams throughout the school.

theduchessofspork · 07/04/2024 22:38

Millions of Williams from babies to teens

A few little Matthews lately (and one Matthias)

A couple of Johns - mid and late teens

One Philip (Pip) early teens

None of the rest

Gingerlygreen · 07/04/2024 22:53

There's a Mark in dds class, he's 10

heartbrokenof · 07/04/2024 22:54

I have a four year old John :)

whiteboardking · 07/04/2024 22:54

Half my catholic classes in 70s were Matthew Mark Luke & John.
Peter's were a bit older.
A few Simons / Joseph's / patrick's around & other saints names.
I now know loads of Williams / Wils / Billy, a few Luke's and a couple of Mathews age below 14
One friend has a Patrick.
Don't know any young marks or johns

elliejjtiny · 07/04/2024 22:56

My boys middle names are John and Matthew. I know a 4 year old called William.

Laruca · 07/04/2024 23:07

My 8 months old is Jon (basque spelling as my husband and me are from the Basque Country in Spain)

Alsonification · 07/04/2024 23:09

I mind a little boy called Mark who's nearly 5. He's the first Mark I've had in over 24 years of childminding. The only other one I know is my cousin who's in his 50's.
Haven't come across any of the other names at all.

ManchesterLu · 07/04/2024 23:15

My cousin had a baby 2 months ago, and he is called Matthew.

sakura06 · 07/04/2024 23:17

I'm a teacher. Matthew is still very popular. John, Philip, Paul come up sometimes, but are fairly rare. Can't think of any boys named Mark or Richard that I've taught in the past decade.

HoHoHoliday · 07/04/2024 23:24

Thinking of the boys I know who are under 12 (so, child rather than teen), and in that style of names, I know a
John
Steven
Raymond
Bernard
two Williams
two Matthews
and another with Philip as a middle name.

Steven, Raymond and Bernard were all named after their grandads, that's how names come back in style I suppose, as the generations go down.

caringcarer · 08/04/2024 00:28

I know 3 Williams and a Matthew. Known as Will and Matt. I know a Marcus but no Marks.
