If you wanted to call your daughter Bella

Would you just name her Bella or Isabella "Bella" or Annabella "Bella" or Annabel "Bella" (not sure if the last one makes sense).

Thoughts?

And which one goes better with Greyson/Grayson in theory?

Arabella would go well.

I would choose a longer name and then shorten, just to give more options.

CremeEggThief · 09/03/2024 11:11

I prefer the longer name of Isabella and it gives her the option to go by either, if she chooses when older. BUT if you love Bella and don't particularly like Isabella or Annabella, I think it would work as a stand-alone name.

Littlebluebird123 · 09/03/2024 11:13

You can name your child what you want. :)

For a Bella name, I like Rosabella.

Bear in mind, if you call your child something other than the exact name you like, they are likely to have other nicknames. For one of my DC, their name is hyphenated and we use one part, others use the other so they're called a totally different name.

Needmorelego · 09/03/2024 11:13

If you want Bella then name her Bella.
Isabella can become Izzie
Annabella can become Anna or Annie.
There's no guarantee she would stick with Bella if it's just a shortening.

GoldLurker · 09/03/2024 11:15

I think if you want her to be Bella then name her Bella because you can't really control which diminutive people use.
I have an Isabel, who I expected would be Issy by the time she was 4 she was Bel of her own choosing, well more as a result of not being ableto pronounce the letter S but she called herself Bel. She's now 15 and only ever Bel.

Beamur · 09/03/2024 11:15

I'd say use Annabel. Or Annabella. Doesn't really matter if she chooses a different diminutive as she gets older. It's your choice but her name.
Isabella/belle is lovely but there are so many. Anna/bell is less commonly used. Anna is a lovely shortening too.

Just name them Bella. I don’t understand this obsession with having to give the child a longer name as an option. Most longer names sound completely different. Most people just get one name and if they don’t like it they use their middle name.

WhiteDigestives · 09/03/2024 11:17

The Bella I know (almost 3) is just Bella and it really suits her as a standalone name.

If I were naming my child and wanted Bella, I’d go for Isabella. It’s just down to preference.

GoldLurker · 09/03/2024 11:19

Also I know everyone says there are lots of Isabel/lle/llas around but mine now 15 is one of 2 of any variation in her secondary school. I was surprised when I found that as at baby groups she was always one of many mostly toddlers a year or 2 older than her. I think it has become a lot less popular as she is now in year 10 and the other Isabelle is in Year 11.

theduchessofspork · 09/03/2024 11:23

I’d give her a full name

I like Arabella and it’s less used than Isabella and the various Anna names

Or you could go for something more like Christabel or Ishbel

But any of them - Isabel/la, Annabel/la, Arabel/la all work.

I think with Bella it’s that it means beautiful so it’s a specific vibe that she might not be up for when she’s older

Revelatio · 09/03/2024 11:27

But lots of names mean something? I don’t think people would automatically make that connection in the UK, it’s a common name.

PossumintheHouse · 09/03/2024 11:29

Annabelle.

I know an almost 3 year old Bella too.

I also know a Bella short for Isabella.

If it was me I'd call her Bella. I don't understand calling your child a name that isn't what you want to actually call them.

wildblue07 · 09/03/2024 11:34

I have an Isabella who we call Bella because that’s the name we loved and is called Bella by everyone. Yes, Isabella is popular but we like it.

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/03/2024 11:42

I like Annabel best because it gives a wider range of options when she’s older (e.g. she could be Anna at work if she preferred, or Annie etc).

DontGiveADuck · 09/03/2024 12:09

I would use a longer name such as Isabella or Annabella to give them a choice. Tbh I dislike Bella anyway, plus is a popular dogs name which puts me off.

PleaseenterausernameX · 09/03/2024 12:11

Just Bella.

Beachs · 09/03/2024 12:31

i personally hate all versions of Bella

BoleynMemories13 · 09/03/2024 12:36

The Bellas I know are all just Bella (3 of them). The only Isabella I know goes by Izzy.

Bella is fine as a stand alone name.

RoundRedRobin · 09/03/2024 12:37

Isabella Grayson sounds and looks lovely 😊

I love all the Bella names as well as on its own, but with the longer surname a longer-Bella name flows.

honeylulu · 09/03/2024 13:20

Bella is a name in its own right so if that is the name you really like and will use, you can just go for Bella.

In that situation the only real advantage of a longer name is to give your daughter options when she is older. I would do that because I am biased and have an Arabella (and I also love Isabella and Annabel/Annabella).

I actually didn't want to shorten my daughter's name to Bella and angled for Abbie but it didn't stick. Bizarrely she ended up being called "Bunny" by family. Once she started school lots of people called her Bella and that is what she prefers herself. Her best friend calls her "Ara" though which is really sweet as its just between the two of them!

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/03/2024 13:22

Dorabella

SpringLobelia · 09/03/2024 13:23

oooh Annabella Greyson is a lovely name IMO.

Very dignified and pretty with it.

AmethystSparkles · 09/03/2024 13:32

Calling her Bella to prevent her from choosing Izzie or Anna seems a bit controlling doesn’t it?
