Jessica or Sophie?!

Hi everyone, really been struggling for names for our little girl, not due until June so still plenty of time to decide. Out of Jessica and Sophie which do you think is nicer? And are they good classic names or boring?! Opinions please! Thank you 😊

I think they are both good classic names.
Not boring.

They are both lovely names!

BoleynMemories13 · 20/01/2024 23:45

Both lovely classic names. I like both but would choose Jessica as I feel Sophie would just blend into the sea of a million Sophias under the age of 10.

Whilst Sophie is still fairly popular in it's own right, every other girl around me was being named Sophia at one point.

Jessica feels more 'different' in that sense (these days). I also really like the shortening Jessie for a little girl and Jess for teenagers and above. Whereas 'Soph' isn't such a nice shortening.

Cherrysherbet · 20/01/2024 23:53

Jessica is my favourite. I also love Jess for short.

SuperFurryCat · 21/01/2024 00:10

Jessica

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2024 00:13

Both lovely, but Jessica more unusual these days so that's what I'd choose.

samestyle · 21/01/2024 00:14

Jessica

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 21/01/2024 00:16

Jessica. It's classic but also kind of 90's, but in a really good way.

Sophie is quite boring.

Xanadu58 · 21/01/2024 00:17

Jessica

Aquamarine1029 · 21/01/2024 00:18

Jessica. Absolutely. It's a gorgeous name and I've always loved it. It's even more appealing because it isn't being used as much currently.

username268 · 21/01/2024 00:18

Both nice names but I prefer Jessica.

It's a stronger name , less popular these days and has great options for nicknames for all ages :)

Charlieradioalphapapa · 21/01/2024 00:21

Bit biased but Jessica is my middle name. Im in my 60’s. It’s classic and hard to pin down to a specific generation. Also not too many of them. Sophie is lovely but there are a lot of Sophie’s if that’s a concern. I don’t think either are boring. Safe, perhaps but not boring.

cariadlet · 21/01/2024 00:22

Both lovely

Pemba · 21/01/2024 01:08

Two lovely names, I really like them both. I feel Sophie has the edge, just slightly, but there are thousands of little Sophias around at the moment, if that might bother you?

I think either Jessica or Sophie would be a good choice, but you may get people saying they are 'nineties names', 'dated' etc. Ignore those sheep-like people, because there is no need to bring yet another Isla or Ava into the world.

toastofthetown · 21/01/2024 01:25

Honestly, I think they’re both boring. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad name or you shouldn’t use it though. I love a few names which are very unpopular on MN. They feel very nineties to me too. Not because I’m a sheep (as was suggested by another poster) but because I’m from the nineties and know so many Sophies and Jessicas my age. They both entered the top hundred for the first time in the 70s/80s, peaked in the top ten in the 90s/00s and are now both falling in popularity. That pattern means they’ll be most associated with the era they were most popular, and at the tail end of a trend a lot of people will find them dull and uninspiring (which is why they’re now falling in popularity).

Sandysandwich · 21/01/2024 01:48

Both nice, personally I would use Jessica as I prefer Jess to Soph when it gets shortened

RoyKentmyhero · 21/01/2024 02:12

Jessica- my absolute favourite girl's name. Alas I never got to use it as I had boys 😭

GintyMcGinty · 21/01/2024 02:23

Love them both but prefer Sophie

Christmasnutcracker · 21/01/2024 02:24

I prefer Jessica/Jessie/Jess too.

Sophie is like Oliver. It’s everywhere. The shortening to Soph is as awful as the shortening to Ollie.

blackpear · 21/01/2024 02:30

Sophie. Gorgeous name.

Out of the two, Sophie is nicer by a very long way. Jessica is a harsh-sounding name, and will inevitably be shortened as Jess.

Christmasnutcracker. What a fucking awful name.

Stellastag · 21/01/2024 02:50

Both are ok! Bit classic or boring could be another word. But do both names roll off the tongue nicely with the surname?? Whichever one sounds best with your surname will be your winner out of those 2

Utterlyexhausted · 21/01/2024 04:30

100% Sophie. It's lovely!

Onelife2024 · 21/01/2024 06:04

I love them both!

Its a close one, but personally I think I’d go for Sophie as it feels a little bit more classic to me and I have a personal preference for names that aren’t shortened “as standard” (Soph is more of an affectionate nn not how you’d introduce yourself at work for example)

I have a real soft spot for the nn Jess though, so it is a difficult choice!

theduchessofspork · 21/01/2024 07:04

Jessica nn Jessie

Not boring at all

I like Sophie but there have been so many Sophias it needs a rest
