Jessica or Sophie?!

Hi everyone, really been struggling for names for our little girl, not due until June so still plenty of time to decide. Out of Jessica and Sophie which do you think is nicer? And are they good classic names or boring?! Opinions please! Thank you 😊

I love them both!

Its a close one, but personally I think I’d go for Sophie as it feels a little bit more classic to me and I have a personal preference for names that aren’t shortened “as standard” (Soph is more of an affectionate nn not how you’d introduce yourself at work for example)

I have a real soft spot for the nn Jess though, so it is a difficult choice!

Jessica is Shakespearean (adapted from an Old Testament name) and has been used for centuries. It’s pretty classic.

I have a Sophie who is 4yo. I’ve never regretted the name choice - it’s timeless and isn’t associated with pre convinced ideas around class etc

Since being 9 months old my LO has been in childcare and hasn’t been in the same year as any Sophia’s/Sophie’s. In our area the trend is for old lady names so lots of Elsie’s, Martha’s etc

Both nice. Prefer Sophie but Sophia is too popular

CultOfTheAirFryer · 21/01/2024 11:03

Both are great, but Jessica probably has the edge.

goingrouge · 21/01/2024 11:07

They're perfectly nice, classic names. I prefer Sophie over Jessica.

They're a little bit safe and boring for me but that's just my opinion. I'm not into crazy names at all and a lot of my choices others might think were boring too.

resm · 21/01/2024 12:08

I’d definitely pick Jessica of the two. Jess is quite a cool nickname when older, kind of like Kate.

Sophie/Sophia/Sofia are all perfectly nice, but I think Jessica would stand out more.

octoberfarm · 21/01/2024 13:58

Sophie for sure ♥️

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 21/01/2024 14:01

Both beautiful classic names

user1477391263 · 21/01/2024 14:03

I prefer Jessica as it's a bit more unusual and I think it's reasonably classic - it was esp popular from the 70s through the 90s but I don't think it sounds dated. I find Sophie and Sophia really boring, sorry. You may as well call her "daughter/girl."

Jessica and love the nn Jess or Jessie
Sophie is ok but hate the nn Soph

IsThePopeCatholic · 21/01/2024 14:26

Sophie.

shoopshoopdedoo · 21/01/2024 14:31

Jessica

Alloveragain3 · 21/01/2024 15:25

Can't go wrong with either

CharlieBoo · 21/01/2024 15:37

Jessica feels a bit dated to me now.. was very popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Don’t hear of it much now.

Sophie is lovely and will stand the test of time more .. good luck

SquigglePigs · 21/01/2024 15:48

I think both are good names but personally I prefer Jessica and Jess is a better shortening than Soph. I know a couple of adult Jess's and a teenager. A nice classic name.

lightelmqueen · 21/01/2024 15:49

Jessica is my favourite out of the two

ginasevern · 21/01/2024 16:45

Jessica. Sophia is every bloody where at the moment and is obviously very close to Sophie - which will end up as Sofe anyway.

MillicentTheMagnificent · 21/01/2024 16:46

Sophie

DragonFly98 · 21/01/2024 16:48

Neither you are giving birth to a baby not a 24 year old.

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2024 17:11

@DragonFly98 , There are Jessicas and Sophies my age and older.
I am much older than 24. My DC are older than 24.

stockpilingallthecheese · 21/01/2024 17:34

When I was young I always thought I'd have two daughters called Jessica and Sophie, and my Barbie dolls always had those names 😆

I think Jessica now as i prefer the nicknames and there's perhaps a few less of them around, but both are lovely!

BaconAndAvocado · 21/01/2024 17:57

I love Sophie but like this..Sophy.

clpsmum · 21/01/2024 17:59

Sophie is lovely and soooooo much nicer than Sophia

username268 · 21/01/2024 20:00

@DragonFly98 🙄

ladygindiva · 21/01/2024 20:34

They're both lovely but I personally prefer Jessica.
