I also knew a Loveday once, which I think is a beautiful name.

I live in West Africa and one particular tribe is known for giving names such as Courage, Beauty, Wisdom, Happy, Bright, Famous, Justice, Perfect, Blessed/Blessing, Charity, Divine.. I could go on and on

Yes, I have come across an Eden, and a daughter called More Blessings (the parents very occasionally used to nickname her Mixed Blessings!)

ds Went to school with a Mazzy-Star.

No doubt due to a long standing crush on Hope Sandoval and repeated late night listenings to Fade Into You.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2024 13:29

Oh and a K-T.

Makes me think of Roman empire

But not Inspector Clouseau?

MythicBish · 19/01/2024 13:30

I have a distant cousin (through marriage I think?) who’s first name is Blue Ocean Wave but they call her Bow.

What puzzles me as a child of the 70s/89s is how many many of my peers have named their children nouns:
Mark (stain), Paul (pool), Ruth (roof), Matt (mat), Carol (Carol) did they never realise that their child's name was also a 'thing'?
Actually regretting writing that now as I love the names Laurel, Willow, etc - but those 70s babes aren't named after flora. I stand corrected.

Poppins2016 · 19/01/2024 13:31

A little girl called Zenon/Xenon - I'm not sure how it was spelt - overheard the name at softplay.

Kal-El - a little boy at softplay.

I imagine primary school teachers have a laugh to themselves when they see the register. Good luck teachers

Hitler never claimed to be a Nazi - apparently it was a pejorative nickname for Catholic Germans for whom Ignaz was a common name, shortened to 'nazi.

Erm...

Nazi is a straightforward abbreviation of the German translation of Nationalist Socialist Party...

Nationalsozialistische

Nothing at all to do with Catholics!

(And for other posters, yes Wolfric is a German name. And little Wolfric's parents are white completely English proud "Nationalist Socialists", read into that what you will. His sibling also has a German name, which has an unfortunate meaning "to get rid of".)

chlamydia!! kid you not!

Seriously? I wonder how that one managed to get through when they were registering the birth (they can be refused if deemed offensive and I think that qualifies).

I worked with a guy who gave his daughter the middle name of Danger.

And yes, he was as David Brentish as that would suggest.

I used to know someone whose middle name was Laser.

Natsku · 19/01/2024 13:33

Overheard at the beach once Veli-Matti. Its a perfectly normal Finnish name but its the translation that gets me - Brother-Matt, like a monk or something

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2024 13:33

I've also met, Progress, Psalms, Godsblessing, Greatness.

Crayfishforyou · 19/01/2024 13:34

A name isn’t random just because you haven’t come across them. It’s a bit offensive that names popular in other countries & cultures are considered random!

so much this! These 'whacky name' threads are always just full of people proudly announcing that they live in a bubble and aren't curious about what's outside it.

ClemmyTine · 19/01/2024 13:34

Rogue. Boy
Arrow Vonni. Girl.

Why is the La-a thing racist???

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2024 13:36

Also forgot Attenborough, named after David. But not a great idea in my city, ad there is a village of the same name.

Madameprof · 19/01/2024 13:36

Also know a Rogue and a Calypso...

Rachie1973 · 19/01/2024 13:37

There’s a whole Facebook group called ‘that name is a tragadeigh’ with some epic names on it lol

All2Well · 19/01/2024 13:37

@Poppins2016

Was the little boy at soft play Asian, Middle Eastern or Black by any chance?

Khalil is a very common name in our (Islamic) culture...sounds like Kal-el in certain accents.

27Mankinis · 19/01/2024 13:38

Woman I used to work with had a GDD called Lemony. I really liked it.

When suffering from pregnancy hormone whackiness I thought of Temperance if DS2 was a girl. Considering DH is a bit of a wine snob buff that would have raised eyebrows.

Igglepiggleandhisboat · 19/01/2024 13:38

Box

PartyAnimalTil9 · 19/01/2024 13:39

Danger- middle name though.

According to ancestry.com I had a great, great, great Swedish grandad called Kunt. Unfortunate.
