Old, Vintage Name Suggestions

Lamore · 01/01/2024 21:53

Hi all

Having a baby, due April 2023, and gender is a surprise. I love old vintage names. Could you suggest any as I'm really struggling to narrow it down?

Some ideas:
Boys - Hugo, Otto, Caspar, Reuben, Wilfred (Wilf),
Girls - Evelyn, Indie/India, Henrietta (Ettie), Audrey, Aubrey, Elodie, Everly

I agree as per pp's that many of your names aren't exactly vintage. I like Henrietta and Audrey plus Hugo and Wilfred.

There are some lovely suggestions here too. I like Cedric and Sabine.

My suggestion would be to maybe look back into your family tree (grandparents, ggparents, great aunts/uncles etc) and see if there is any names there that you like. It might be nice to repurpose an old family name.

Also consider heritage names, (eg, do you have Celtic heritage? If you do maybe look at Welsh, Irish, Scottish versions of names. Or Italian, Spanish, Asian, you get the idea).

Not Indie or India, they're not vintage, and not particularly nice.

I also recommend screaming you choices up the stairs to see if you like them..because you will be (at the park etc) in the future.

Also consider what nickname you will use, because everyone I know ends up with a pet name for their child. I know four Henrys who are all called Hen, or Hens for short. (they all chose Henry as it couldn't be shortened 🙄😂)

MerryChristmasToYou · 02/01/2024 09:37

Evelyn - overused, will be Evie
Indie/India - dreadful
Henrietta (Ettie) - ok
Audrey - ok
Aubrey - boy's name
Elodie - not vintage, will be Ellie
Everly - surname, not vintage

Hugo, Otto, Caspar, Reuben, Wilfred (Wilf), - only Wilfred seems vintage

Of course they are;

The word vintage literally means "of age." With such an open meaning, there are many interpretations. Most antique dealers consider an item to be vintage if it is at least 40 years old. So, in the context of this blog date, a vintage item would be made between 1918 and 1978.

Claire and Amanda were popular when I started school in 1976 so born early 70s...

NachosAndCheese · 02/01/2024 14:23

I don’t know if you’re worried about popularity but school is overrun with Evies and Evelyn’s. Especially if you add the filler middle name of Rose/Grace/May on the end. Soooooo overused.

Love India and Henrietta is nice.

Reuben, know bloody loads of them! Wilf is great, Caspar is quite popular now.
