Advice on the name Seren

Hello,
I am pregnant with a baby girl, i really want to call her Seren- although sadly my parents don't like the name... what are your thoughts? is it a girly pretty name?

The definition of Seren in Welsh, means star and i love the meaning. I was thinking of making her name sort of fairylike? (as the name means star)

does anybody have any ideas?

thank you very much

from romy

I think it's a lovely name. It's feminine and strong but not frilly. I also love the meaning. If you love the name just go for it. Your parents will grow to like it. I say this from experience.

I really like it but my only problem with it is that it seems to be a very popular dogs name at the moment every dog I meet seems to be called Seren or Ruby!

Redlarge · 22/11/2023 18:47

Its beautiful classy and unique

ChrisPriss · 22/11/2023 18:50

The only Seren I know has a big sister called Romy 😊

it’s a lovely name!

blaum · 22/11/2023 18:53

I like it

dressedforcomfort · 22/11/2023 18:55

Gorgeous name. Your parents need to keep their opinions to themselves.

CuteAsDuck · 22/11/2023 19:00

Beautiful name. One I wanted to use if I had ever had a girl.

Use the name you love ❤️

Ttpetals · 22/11/2023 19:05

Very common name in Wales

Maharajah20 · 22/11/2023 19:09

I think it's a really beautiful and unique name.

Olika · 22/11/2023 19:14

I really like the name.

kezzykicks · 22/11/2023 19:14

I quite like it, I know two - one in my ds's class and one older one. Both are Welsh. It's pretty.

ilovelamp82 · 22/11/2023 19:14

Ah, this was to be my girl name. I never had a girl in the end. I love the name though.

SpringIntoChaos · 22/11/2023 19:15

Beautiful name OP ❤️

StillWantingADog · 22/11/2023 19:19

I love it but I’m welsh

nice name but I’m put off that in English it will be pronounced serrun

in welsh it’s serr-en with a rolled r.

Love it. My DD has a Welsh name which made some family members go 'WTF'. I think it sounds elfin and if I'd had another I would have chosen Seren. Congratulations on your pregnancy ❤️

romdowa · 22/11/2023 19:21

It's a beautiful name. My mother hated my ds name but I used it anyway . Its harder though when you are 17 but you'll be the only one to register the babies name and it's your choice , they'll get over it but until that day I wouldn't talk to them about it any more.

BertieBotts · 22/11/2023 19:23

It's a beautiful name. My grandma was Welsh and it was on my list, but I had only boys.

It's your choice what to name your baby.

(And I don't like the suggestion of Serena - nothing wrong with it, but it's a totally different name!)

Startyabastard · 22/11/2023 19:25

It might not be what you're looking for but 'Stella' is Star in Italian.

BertieBotts · 22/11/2023 19:29

It also reminds me of this - maybe you watched it when you were little? My DS1 used to watch it, he is 15 now.

I also had my first baby young and it was definitely hard but also one of the best things I've done. Trust your instincts and listen to lots of different perspectives, and you'll be alright.

It's a gorgeous name, ignore your parents and go with the name you love.

I stupidly listened to my mum and changed my dds name to one she liked and really regret it. I mentioned it to my mum recently and she denied ever having said she didn't like it 🙄

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 22/11/2023 19:53

It's nice enough but lots of people mispronounce it as Serun or Sairun.
Even the afore mentioned Tom Archer sounds as though he's saying Seden.

KirstenBlest · 22/11/2023 20:01

It's a fairly new name so older people won't think of it as a name. The pronunciation is SERR-enn (definitely not Serrun or Sur-ENN, because it's a word first then a name)

It's quite popular. Babies called Seren in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com). Bear in mind that the stats are for England & Wales, and it's likely to be more popular in Wales. For comparison you could look up a popular Welsh name like Jac, Osian, Mabli, etc.

Your parents named you, they don't get to name your baby.

If you really want to scare them, show them 200+ Welsh Baby Names for Girls and Boys | Mumsnet. (It's spectacularly bad)

My opinion: It's not my cup of tea, I see it as a word not a name, and the mispronunciation (Serrun, Sairun, Serenne) would grate. but I'm a lot older than you and a pedant
Seren Luna looks wrong. I'd use Luned (LYN-ed) (or Eluned (El-INN-ed) instead. Seren Eluned flows well.

** I chose Luned as it avoids the El- name. As a first name Eluned gets said pretty much as Luned

redautumnleaves · 22/11/2023 20:05

I was going to say the same thing! The Archer's Seren is the only one I know and I come across a lot of babies through work. It's a beautiful name.
